X Type noise help
Discussion
Hi,
I have seen an x type I was going to buy,(2001 3.0 sport auto) the seller has just contacted me saying he has just noticed a whining noise.
As i live in london and he's in scotland it's not something i can check out myself.
He's offering me a £300 discount to take it as is.
I know it's not much to go on but any advice would be good.
Thanks Paul

Paul, what's the mileage? This is a 1st year product and they had all the problems, one of which is the propshaft whine, this can occur at any speed but is normally noticed between 50-70.I have seen an x type I was going to buy,(2001 3.0 sport auto) the seller has just contacted me saying he has just noticed a whining noise.

Many cars have had the propshaft replaced under warranty and Jaguar I believe in later year models have changed the design. Check with the current owner on history, if you want a safer bet then try to find a 2003 onwards model where the initial launch problems were rectified or that the car in question has had the problems fixed.
Check, door locks and key fob, rear boot lock and potential rust around that area, weeping windscreen jets, popping air vents, prop shaft, bushes, inner front tyres (early models suffered severe wear Jaguar changed the angle)
I've run one of these for 2 years without any problems whatsoever. Mine is a late 2002 2.5 manual with 45k on it. Some people will tell you that the whining is a standard feature with the 4 wheel drive models but this is not true. Mine is silent.
The transfer box is a known problem area i believe and so is the auto gearbox.

Run and hide. I cant make it clearer than that.
Could be gearbox, transfer box, rear diff or probshaft, all could make that noise, and I've changed many back when these car were under waranty. Auto box in early X-types all failed First 50,000 cars or so I'd guess. Car might be on its 3rd as done 60k+.
Transfer box's fail on early ones too, noises and oil leaks usually. My advise get a manual with a D on the chassis number.
Last six digits will be something like C25990, When it says D22345 then its a better car. Bigger numbers and later digits in alphabet mean later production run, the later the better.
