I'm looking at an S-Reg xj sport metallic blue 140K at my local car auction, the car has a months MOT left on if and full service history. One problem though, after inspection of the engine I found there wasnt any engine coolant or very little left in the tank. Everything else is in good condition for its age and has a reserve of around £1850. The car has been entered by a main dealership part-ex. What would you do?

Avoid like the plague.

If you want a Jag then buy a dealer px or privately. Get the car inspected.

Auctions are fine for later models but where things seem amiss on early ones you could be buying trouble.

It could be lots of things, from just low fluid to broken impeller on the waterpump to something v serious.

400 for the waterpump to a couple of thusand for a new engine. To be honest there are less questionable car around for about 1k more so I'm not sure I'd take the risk. Once you have a proper problme with a jag the bills can wuickly become very big.

The other view of course is that so long as you can keep water in the tank you can always move the car on for 1800 or even a bit more if there is a problem!

I guess that could be why the cars there in the first place, maybe someone wants to palm it off on someone else. Tempting for the money though!

No No No No NO!

Don't even consider it unless you have a very large pile of money to waste.

If the water pump impeller has broken ( a relatively common problem) the engine is probably cooked. There are various other serious problems that can arise like timing chain tensioners and nikasil liners which both can end up requiring engine replacement.
I would think there is no realistic chance of checking these things at auction.

If you fancy a Jag, you could pick up a very good X300 model with hugely more reliable mechanics for that kind of money.
