Hi ya folks.

Seeing as an XKR will almost certainly be my next car, it only seems right that I should make you aware of this.

It would be great if we could hear/see an XKR roaring down the runway.

Russ,

I was in a similar predicament a while back, I was considering changing the Cerb for an XKR. I mean just look at them, gorgeous, aggressive, practical and cheaper to run than the Cerbera.

Then I woke up wink they are slowwwwwwwwwww

Ok blistering performance isn't quite everything, nor is that wonderous spit-back and popping sound exploding out of the decatted zorsts every time you lift off the throttle.

The XK is a far more practical even grown-up choice, but and it's a massive BUT...... it isn't a Cerbera.

So what did I do?

I kept the Cerb and bought an old XJS Convertible, now I have the best of both, I still have the ability to go out a scare cats, dogs and old people. I can get the 'scrambled egg syndorome' out of my system and yet still cruise sublimely across Continental Europe or down to the garage for a packet of marlboro with consumate ease...it's still an event every time I fire up the Jag, just not quite as loud or as fast as the TVR.

just imagine your pottering along the motorway in yer XKR and one of the Cerb lot suddenly appear in yer mirrors...what would you do, pull over and wave?....try and hack it out?

me, I'd be banghead on the steering wheel screaming at myself and at Mrs C as to WHY OH WHY ! did I let my baby go.

However, when in the XJS I say with a loving and comfortable sigh!!!
Look darling...aren't they cute...Instead of picking the brats up from yer mothers....shall we take the Cerb out for a spin when we get home?

HTH
hehe

Hmm. Cooky, you seem quite suprised that the Jag doesnt match a TVR in noise (well lets face it, nothing is as loud as a TVR), or pace. Its a bit odd to compare the two really. The XKR is not meant to be a brash racer.

As for the rearview mirror dilemma, maybe i'd just let them past then before long cruise past waving at them on the hardshoulder with the owner on the phone to RAC. tongue out

Just read some of the blurb on the website, and found one comment amusing:

"Access is via some narrow lanes, please drive quietly.."

He he, I think its going to be far from quiet with shed loads of Tivs rocking up.

are you confusing an XKR with an XK8?

The R is designed as a high performance alternative to the 8, and it does have many similarities to a Cerbera, I even would state it is marketed as the TVR is too, to a similar audience.

However a Cerb is not a 'brash racer' but a high performance GT....are you confusing it with a Tuscan or other later and inferior model? hehe

I love Jags, and have owned quite a few over the years ranging from 'rusty old nails' to some 'serious bits of kit' but each have been 'loved' and cared for to my best ability. When the time comes that age, disability or finances dictate it's time to pass the TVR on I WILL continue my long love affair with Jaguar. I did not wish my post to be represented as a 'put-down' on the XKR as in many ways it is superior to a Cerbera, but for the time being performance and style to me are major factors and in swapping a Cerb for n XKR to me is a backward step.

We could also include a DB7 into the fray, as they are also very similar in design and application, but this opens up another can of worms as Mrs C nags like hell for me to get her one and other than the performance aspect she's bang on, it is an awesomely beautiful motor car but still inferior in performance.

LMAO, this was the very reason I changed my mind on a Cerb, they are excellent looking/sounding car with great performance, but an absolute waste of money IMO. Don't get me wrong I'm a great believer of keeping your pride and joy in tiptop condition no matter what it is, but to own one of these cars you really need to have finances to throw away at it. They would be one of the greatest sports car in the world if they just didn’t break down like they do. Hence my final decision in my jag, you can keep your "1 second" to 60 quicker or "2seconds" quarter mile quicker, I’d rather get to the pub on my Sunday afternoon cruise with piece of mind.

I wasn't aware that the XKR was as reliable as you seem to imply.

Didn't a couple of them have a problem with liners & tensioners ?

If not, there seems to be a hell of a lot on Autotrader with "engine replaced" on them.

I dont think you're kidding anyone if you're still planting TVR as a direct competitor to the XKR.

Although the Cerb is probably the most GT of the Tivs, its far from a GT in normal terms. ie the noise, comfort, and effort it takes to drive makes it a bad choice for a continential cruise (as you stated in your original post!), and hence is not a GT.

People buy TVRs for VERY different reasons than they buy XK's hence its not a direct competitor. I fully accept that the Cerb is faster, louder, lighter, rawer, but the XK has been specifically built to lose some of these features, in favour of long term usability.

Kryten,

Have you had a drive of a Cerb? TBH long distance work is awesome, I did the south of France last year and it never missed a beat. It is very different to driving the Jag as you don't seem to get tired, you just want to drive on and on. Even when travelling here going from say Manchester to Bristol and back in a day is just so easy (even rewarding if you know what I'm trying to say).
Reliability wise Cerbs are much maligned, the V8's are pretty much bulletproof if you don't hammer them from cold, and the other usual stuff isn't too bad either, most issues arrise when you try and keep things running on the cheap..as with most cars and especialy true with Jaguars. Most costs are incurred when doing the usual 'upgrades' ie, shocks, wheels, shiney bits and then the somewhat wallet killing search for more power, the performance mods...you know the my dads bigger than your dad syndrome. I don't subscribe to this as I'm a bit of a purist, my own view is keep it standard and in tip top condition.

My choice is still that I'd rather have a Cerbera than an XKR, but should you ask me again in a few more years as I head towards the big 5 0 and the answer may well be different. But for now at least I have a 'Sporty Pussy' to keep me amused whilst not playing the the TVR. hehe

Cooky, have you tried the new XKR? It's very different to the old one.

Theres a couple of XKR's near me that both have afte5 market exhausts on and both sound very nice. Not Cerb loud but still meaty enough to please. Would certainly have a new exhaust at the top of my list if an XKR was an option.

I recently had a budget of 20k available for a car upgrade, and an XKR was on my list of possibles. That and A Maserati 3200, but another Cerbera came along at the right price.

Would none of you XKR owners ever consider a Cerb or the 3200, or is it just me.

I will have an XKR at some stage, by the way smile

The thing is compared to the Cerb and 3200-4200 the XKR costs peanuts to run (apart from Fuel and tyres) they are loverly cars if a bit floaty
