I guess that would be a straight six model.
I was involved in the V8 so it's one of my favourites, the straight six is a very tough unit though and also avaliable with the manual Getrag 290 box.

can i just ask, why did they go with the eaton rootes supercharger as opposed to a screw supercharger?

pk
The screw compressor and lysholm compressor was looked into.
Both of these have isentronic efficiencies of may be 70 % or more. The Roots blower is closer to 55 to 60 % at best. the Lysholm gave some great results and the net result was that it was quieter too and the temperature of the intercooler tanks was cooler also.
The Lysholm and screw compressor do internal compression work, the Roots blower does not- it just delivers a volume. This means that the Roots blower can be bypassed out so at part load when you're pootling around you dont incur a fuel economy penalty. Just for some background- a Lysholm compressor consists of a male and female rotor that is doing this internal compression work, the roots blower is more like two triple lobed "scissor" rotors passing over one another.
With the more efficient Lysholm- if you just bypass the charger at part load- because internal compresion work is being done, you will incur a fuel economy loss. The alternative of "de clutching" this supercharger is an option- however the higher the speed and load you want to de-clutch this thing at (you size it bigger to gain more theoretical fuel economy savings)- the bigger the clutch has to be. This will be a nightmare for driveability calibration- when you're trying to make the car run smoothly and where you want it to be inperceptible.

Anyone know of any discrete mods...engine wise to eek out a few more ponies? or handling mods (not that it's a slouch but improvement can help with wear and tear issues)

also where'sthe best place to buy replacement badges as mine are starting to delaminate a bit and could do with a change. Some new clearlenses for the indicators may look nice too if I can find some...along with some brighter headlamps.
Hi Again Cooky, I have read somewhere you can get a pulley upgrade for the s/c which makes a great improvement along with a freeflow air filter, try Paramount Performance i think it was them.

As for new badges i'm sure you will still be able to buy them from Jaguar. Failing that SNG Barrat or David Manners are the best for parts.

Torque Developments used to do some upgrades for the XJR6 which more or less gave it the V8 numbers (I think). Info here:

Nice car, by the way.

Thanks for the link mate, I for-see a trip down to Essex on the horizon wink

Also cheers to all of you who have complimented upon the colour, I originally wanted a black one with black leather but I suppose the 'Sven Blue' was just too damn irresistible to a Manc City Fan the flesh.

Today has also thrown up a bit of a result..wifebeast evil who pulled all sorts of disapproving faces and viscous mutterings regarding the purchase of said Pussycat/Monster (Scotto aka Jagdp will vouch for this one as he was the poor unfortunate who had to put up with her wingeing and whining back to base after we picked it up) drove to my work in it today, and, after relieving me of several car improvement vouchers she actually complimented the car saying something along the lines of ... it doesn't hang around, does it? .... I think I'll take the kids to the park in it this afternoon.

BTW
shout Gorvid!.... you bought that Black Beauty yet? or are you pondering about with yer thumb up yer ar$e hehe You know it makes sense mate yes

So I put the rascal in for a MOT today and it passed without fault bounce

decided to book it in for a wax-oil and was quoted £70 all in including treating it to some patches of sealer where the protection is starting to flake in a few tiny patches underneath...good news was there is absolutely no rust whatsoever.

The front flexi brake lines show signs of a little perishing but then I do know a man who can sort me some nice Goodridge replacements hehe

However I did notice quite a few stonechips along the bottom of the sills and rear valance which are better sorted sooner than later and the lower part of the radiator support looks untidy from underneath...can this be bought separately and what kind of a job is it to fit...rad out? or can it be done in situ?

so all in all a tremendous result and other than regular servicing and the odd unforeseen breakdown which is inevitable with a car of this age, this is one bargain barge will cost three fifths of f'all to keep on the road for many a year.

They really are fantastic value at the moment and a good one can only be a sound investment which can be used and enjoyed.

Update.

Had the car a bit now, It still amazes me, had a right good hoon last Sunday coming back from Donington. Had Jagdpanther behind in his Burgundy Battlecruiser and we even managed a spat with a biker through the twisties out of Matlock to Buxton. The Big Cat showed extraordinary footing whilst performing a high speed decent down the 'Cat and Fiddle' and then on the even twistier Whalley Bridge to Macclesfield road through Kettleshulme.

These 'big barges' truly are amazing. When it corners it's nice and flat there is none of the usual Jaguar roll and hardly any scuttle shake. Then as you feel your line through the corners you can just stamp on the throttle and then feel the power push you through smile

Just a couple of Q' to the more experienced among us

1, do you leave the sport button on at all times?

2, replaced the batteries in the key fob, but the car doesn't seem to recognise and deactivate the locks and alarm. where is the receiver for the fob? and is it also battery powered? or do I need to 'reset' the alarm.

cheers

Sport button ON smile
Remotes, if the remote has lost its code it will need to be re-coded. Check also that the buttons are clean as dirt collects under the rubber buttons.

Hi guys, I used to own a V12 XJS, which was once my Dad's from new. I am looking to get into an XJR shortly - last of the XJ40 V6 era, to avoid the early V8 nikasil troubles. Any pointers for me before I dive in?

Hopefully I'll sign back in next month as a new XJR member smile

Howdy,

AFAIK

The XJ40 version of the XJR is a straight 6 and non supercharged. The X300 is also a straight 6 but with a supercharger. (this is what I currently have) the body is almost identical to the V8 but for a few subtle changes (grille wheels and possibly a few other bits ad bobs) The interior of the V8 is nicer, more modern and filled with toys.
I opted for the XJR6 because of the possible problems encountered with the 8's but I'm sure there are plenty of sorted ones around.
Good luck with your search and test drive as many as you can, the XJR6 is great fun.

Just re-read my post and I actually meant to say I want an X300 XJR V6! - I thought this car has the same interior to all V8 models? Only the dash binnacle looks sligtly different to me on pictures.

ps

What do you guys think with manual v auto on these cars? My XJS had an annoying habit of kicking down when I didn't want it to, which can be a pain in the wet! Are the X300 auto boxes any better?
