Hi,
I have a 1997 XJ6 and I read a previous post about fitting a CD changer. The radio cassette in the car is the original Jag one with the tape/CD button, but when I bought it, it didn't have a CD changer. I just bought one on ebay for £28 (Alpine CHM-620 )and mounted it ok in the boot and found the eight pin connector and plugged it in. The power went into the cd changer as when I pressed the button the cd cassette powered out. THEN when I switched on the radio/cassette and pressed the tape/cd button NOTHING HAPPENED! AAArghh.

Does it need an adapter?

I would be grateful for any help.

Thanks

Barry

I think the precious post was mine. I fitted a CHM-S630 in to my 1995 XJR and it worked perfectly straight away. I bought a brand new one though. If yours was 2nd hand then maybe the changer is faulty? My research showed that a CHM-S630 would fit, I don't know if there are any differences from the 620 that could affect compatibility. The Jag changer is made by Alpine and uses their M-Mux connection (basically an 8 pin DIN I believe), so if you have the 8 pin connector I would expect it to work. Later ones use fibre connections AFAIK so would need an adaptor, but they would be obviously incompatible on sight. Try getting the changer checked first.

Hi
that is one thing I am going to check however the fact that cd changer powered up when I plugged it in makes me wonder whether it might be something wrong with the tape/cd button. I have heard that sometimes this can go wrong and might need repair. Has anyone had any experience of this?

Simple to test the Tape/CD button. Put a tape in the player, and press the button, see if the tape player works, then press the AM/FM button, see if radio toggles between Tape and Radio.

Hi
thanks for that advice about the button. I just tried that and the button works but still can't get the CD to work?

Hi
Does anyone know if the alpine CHM-s620 is compatable with a 97 XJ6? That might be the problem.

Very often when introducing an autochanger, the power has to be removed from the head unit,it might shuffle disc etc, just not be recognised data wise. Well it does on the stuff i know !

Didn't need to interrupt power on mine when I installed the changer. I suspect either compatibility or faulty changer TBH.
Do you know anyone local to you with an X300 that you could try your changer on? It would be very quick and easy to try it.

Why not put out a request for someone with an X300 locally on "General Gassing" - you may get a better response as I find this forum is a bit quiet compared to others I use on PH. I see from your profile you are in Essex so it shouldn't be hard to find another X300 close to you. How about looking for a local independant Jag specialist - they may know the answer or have an X300 you can try.
