Back in 1999 when the astounding F-Type was on the launching ramps, I saw a Top Gear feature on it and it drove down a runway sounding, as JC put it, like Prodigy playing in the exhaust pipe.

I can't find it on YouTube - does anyone know of a clip please?

Thanks - I had a deposit on one and IIRC the two terms were interchangeable. But as always with Jaguar, they make stunning concept cars that the world clamours to buy - then scrap it turn out a diesel saloon or something that looks like Vauxhall frown

So after 40 years we're still waiting for an E-Type successor...

Unfortunately the clip is unwatchable as some total wr has replaced the proper noise with gangsta rap type SHIT...

I did try to warn you.

There has been more than more attempt at the "F-Type", back in the 80s there was the XJ41 project

Hmm. Which bit of 'sleek lightweight open-top sports car' are they not grasping do you feel? Everything turns into a bruising GT.

Remember that it was a mid 80s car.

Also remember that whilst the E-Type started life as a sleek fairly* lightweight sports car, by the end of it's life it wasn't, it had evolved into a grown up heavy weight GT. There is a wide gulf between an early series I and a series 3 E. I'm afraid that is the normal course of events for cars. As they get older they get fatter.

Also although the E was always offered as either a FHC or an OTS, there wasn't sufficient money in the development pot, so the cars weren't allowed to be as different as they would have liked. The FHC was the primary car, and whilst I prefer the OTS, and I think it's one of the most beautiful production cars ever conceived, it's compromised by it's having to follow the FHC design. A tad more rake in the windscreen would probably help :-)

I'm not sure that Jaguar have ever really built a lightweight sports car, even the original alloy bodied XK120 OTS used the chassis from the large saloon as it's basis.

[* nothing with an XK engine upfront is ever going to be truly lightweight, the engine was primarily designed to power large luxury saloons, it's huge, it's heavy and it's designed to run for ever]

the thing is by modern standards the e-type is light weight, 3.8 roadster is 1120kg and the coupe 1145 which is 70kg lighter then the original xk120

Not having to lug around that huge chassis helps :-)

But you're right, by modern standards the E-Type was light, but for 1961 it wasn't particularly lightweight, but is was still a pretty useful saving compared with my XK150. (over 200KG). But everything from 1961 was a lightweight compared to today. A Jag Mk2 3.8 weighs less than a basic Golf.

The E was still a bit heavier than an Austin Healey 3000. The lightweights of the day were under 700KG.

Interesting comment that "Had a deposit on one". How did that happen then? The 180 was NEVER destined for sale.

We're getting confused. I started the thread with 'F-Type' but somebody altered it to 'XK180'. As I understand it the XK180 was the concept from which the F-Type was developed. Jaguar was taking £200 deposits for the F-Type, as it was known (see thread title), in 1999. However later in the year I got a letter from the dealer with an apology and my £200 back.

I think you'll agree it's pretty damn beautiful:

nice piccy's!!

I loved that car truely beautiful, and when you look at it now it hasn't actually aged that badly at all. This would still make shedloads of cash for jaguar if it could be built now.

That car would have been really a great investment for Jaguar.
It would have been a Boxster killer.

It is still very actractive after several years and Jaguar never officially said to project was killed

We even started a while ago a petition http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/jaguar_f_type_b...

I have the press pack with the high res jpegs if anyone wants them, drop me an email and i'll mail them to you

Even now looking at it i think it's one of the most beautiful cars i've seen and the backside on it is just amazing. If they were to announce this i would be done my local dealer to put a deposit down before even thinking about how i was going to pay for it. The original plan was for an all ali car, stripped out like the elise with just the addition of the leather. I know they had a choice between this and the diesel engine, and yes i'm sure it was the right financial choice, but the old man would have known to make it, it's a heart over a head decision, something all fun cars are.

I still hope when tata buys them, someone has the sense to refresh this and look at doing it, like the effect of the xk120 and the e-type it would make jaguar seem like a cool brand again and get rid of the carpet and slippers image. I was in the local dealer yesterday and they do make amazing and beautiful cars ( i was trying to find out if there was a way to flip the hid lights on the xjr over for driving in france, if anyone knows drop me a line) but it was noticeable the age of people buying the cars.

Make an f-type like this, make it with a detachable hardtop for the winter and an elise style roof for the summer, if it'll fit put the 4.2 n/a v8 or a s/c v6. Give us ABS and maybe switchable traction control and just a few simple options so you can just churn them out fast and for a nice profit and see what it does for the company.

Is there any other concept car for any manufacturer that almost 10 years after it was released people still talk about and want to order? If the success of things like the viper, the tt, the boxster, the 8c show is people actually want the concepts, so build them

pk

ps i don't think the lightweight e-types were that much lighter they only got down to 1100-1150, even the smaller more exotic d-type was 880kg
