will be attempting to master the art of laoding pictures , IT isnt my thing , and when i do i'll post a number of photos of the re-build and the finsihed article - i think it looks fabulous and am particuarly pleased with the engine bay now that it has intercoolers for the chargers

Bonhams sold one at Auction in 2008 a cabriolet for £11,500.wow.

My Lister car as determined by the engine number , LP standing for Lawrence Pearce and 70L referring to capacity , doesn't appear in this list - unsurprising really as nothing much about the cars was finished properly.........

My view and that of the engineers who have helped in the re-build of my car is that they left a lot to be desired especially conisdering the prices at the time - i have a brochure which shows that the basic cost of a Le mans spec car was £155,000 and to add six speed box, sports exhaust and Brembo brakes was a further £15000 making a total cost of £170,000 - and this was in 1990 ! Even today you can buy a McLaren for that money , a DBS or if you must a Ferrari.....

Incredible that they sold so many really , just shows you how loyal English sports car fans really are.

Re your other posting , i've spent a lot of time over the past 5 years wishing i'd bought a 6.0L XJRS ! The grass is always greener...


Nobody seems to have jumped to the defence of the build quality of their Lister?

My car is the first car on that list.

Engine pulls very strong when its running. Hesitates at around 2500rpm but its more than driveable.

Handles really very well and steering is well weighted and sorted.

I was amazed at how well my car drives...far better than the Aston V8 X Pack of the same era.

I upset a few Lynx Eventer owners on another thread.I just dont get buying an XJS standard mechanical car with a hatchback for not disimilar cost of a XJS Lister.Pound for pound the Lister has to be one of the best valued super cars available.

I'm not sure you upset them.
I think you may both similarly fail to see the appeal of each others chosen cars.
Luckily we don't all want the same thing.

I think the Eventer is a cracking looking car I just dont get the price.If you buy a car like the XJS for performance then the extra £20k for a hatchback seems excessive.Now the extra £20k for a Lister seems every bit money well spent.

Well imagine you own a couple of Labradors and fancy a nice neo-classic.

My Mrs fancies a R107 MB (70/80 SL) but drives a bloody great estate coz we have kids. Sometimes you have to choose a car that fits in with your lifestyle.

I must admit I was rather taken aback by the price for a Lynx, but if you want one then there isn't much choice (can you image what an Aston shooting brake is worth?). In recent years Lynx cars have become sort after, their D-Type look alikes are worth a fortune (they're damn good cars). The prices paid for classic cars never make sense. It is always just what the market will stand. I mean look at 60s Jag saloons. They made the Mk2, the S-Type, the 420 and the Mk10/420G, in order of size and price when new. The Mk2 was very much the baby. Now look at the prices, the Mk2 is at the top of the pile, then the S-Type because it looks more like the Mk2, then the Mk10 and lastly the 420. That would also be roughly the order in terms of the numbers left too, so the exclusivity argument doesn't hold any water.

Enough already.

The Eventer is more practical than the original XJS.
The Lister is less practical than the original XJS.

The Eventer is mechanically identical to the original XJS and hence is realtively easy/inexpensive to maintain.
The Lister contains many specialist/unique parts, and is potentially very expensive to maintain.

The Eventer is an attractive car and enhances the XJS lines.
The Lister is an ugly car and ruins the XJS lines.

To summarise.
The Eventer is a low risk attractive option if you want something different and practical.
The Lister is a high risk unnattractive option if high performance is your only criteria.

This is my theory of why the prices are as they are.

P.S. I'd love a Lister wink

See I think the Lister looks stunning and has performance to match.Who buys a 20 year old car to use every day now so practicallity is no longer an issue, maybe when it was new I could see some XJS lovers enjoying the extra space.
I have never actually seen either of them on the road which is a shame.

Footnote:
One of the most illustrious names in sports car racing history, the Lister-Jaguar, designed by Brian Lister, swept almost all before it during its first full racing season in 1957, and in recent years cars bearing the Lister name have been a major force in GT racing worldwide. From the early 1980s the name has also graced some of the world's fastest road cars, after an agreement first with BLE Automotive and then WP Automotive saw converted XJ-S models marketed as Lister-Jaguars.
This Lister Jaguar MkIII Convertible is powered by a 7.0-litre version of the Jaguar V12 engine producing a muscular 496bhp. Originally the company's demonstrator, the car was kept by Lister until 1994 when it was sold to a Mr Paul Miles. In 1996 Lister took the car back in part exchange and resold it that same year to Mr Steven Raven (see bill of sale and V5 on file). Lister continued to maintain the car until 1998. Mr Raven sold the Lister to the Heritage Attractions private collection in 2000 and in April 2009 the car passed to its next owner (the current vendor) who purchased it at Bonhams' RAF Museum, Hendon sale (Lot 358).
In a collection for half of its life, hence the relatively low recorded mileage of circa 13,000, this well maintained car is described as in generally excellent original condition and is said to drive beautifully. Currently taxed and MoT'd, it comes with original Lister Cars leather wallet and service book, Jaguar instruction manuals, copies of test reports, sundry service/maintenance invoices, Swansea V5C registration document and a quantity of expired MoTs confirming mileage. Finished in blue metallic with parchment leather interior, 'B8 SER' represents an exciting opportunity to acquire a unique car possessing an exceptional specification, as well as a direct link with one of the greatest of Jaguar exponents.

I didn't realise that they did convertibles.
That price is not far off what a decent late convertible is going for these days.
Does anyone know what Lister did in the way of chassis stiffening, I know the Celebration vert was much stiffer than the earlier ones, at least that was the case with the ones I've driven.

Ron Beatty Listers are well engineered , he was a top man , but the later cars leave a lot to be desired i think - David Marks has re-engineered my car to the extent that i now call it the Dave Marks Special.I cant recommend him highly enough, excellent engineer and as honest as the day is long.
What's being done? How long is the project? When are you due for completion? What sort of power do you expect from the engine when all done?

I'd love to read all about it. Any magazines etc likely to do a full write up?

I managed to get a performance chip put in to transmission on my '89 XJS V12 auto.. oh.. I'm enjoying that.. but.. if I were a rich man.. !

In my humble opinion,that's not a lot for a car of that calibre.

Paid over half of that for my V12 convertible.......

Sorry for the thread resurrection, but do we still have any Lister owners on here.

Thinking about starting a search for a Le Mans couple, but I've not seen one for sale for a while. frown
