As many of you know I have been pursuing the possibility of fitting a Limited Slip Diff to my XKR

Well I can now confirm that myself and Tom at TL Jaguar have secured the rights to sell and fit the Quaife ATB Helical LSD differential to the steel bodied XK8/R's as well as the XJ8/R's
We can also fit LSD's to the Ally bodied XK's and XJ's

This will be a fully fitted conversion though TL Jaguar, contact Tom on 0118-973-7779

Having driven another car with this LSD fitted all I can say is what a transformation.
The Quaife ATB is far superior to the old clutch type LSD's needing no adjustments though its life.

Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly would a limited slip diff do for me on normal roads and driving?

My understanding is that the limited slip prevents one wheel from spinning too much faster than the other, so can appreciate that if you had one wheel on soggy grass and the other on tarmac it would allow you to apply power through both wheels rather than just spinning one up.

But... I expect there must be much more to it than this biggrin

I noticed that the number for TL Jaguar is a Reading number... Mmm.. must go and look them up, I need a service on the XJR!

Grip.

I had a Quaife ATB diff in my Sunbeam-Lotus years ago, and I also had one fitted to my old Saab 9000 Aero that I owned some years back.

You do need to adjust your driving technique for them though, but, it's not a big deal, but, don't know what the implications would be on an auto when you can't de-clutch the diff...?? Probably not too much of an issue unless wanting to engage in hooliganary wink

I can't believe Jaguar never fitted a LSD to the XK's when new, that shocking considering they were pretty much common place on Jag's back in the 60's/70's etc.

You can put more the power down all the time with LSD mate not just on the track. Although admittedly I don't think everyone would notice. But for reference think of when you've pulled out of junctions with the TCS on and it's cut the power.

I'm no expert (at neither engineering nor driving) but I do notice that a lot of the power is spun away during "spirited" driving or the TCS just acts as a kill joy. A happy medium would be nice.

I think this was discussed on here a while ago by folks more knowledgeable than me and the general concensus is you probably don't need one unless you drive your car hard but it would be handy every now and again.

I probably won't have the pennies for it anyway!

Edit: Beaten to it by a better post!

I wouldn't ex[ect it wouldn't be that much....unless pulling the diff and taking apart is a huge job on a Jag.

Diff unit itself would likely be somewhere in the £400-500 range tops, plus whatever it costs for pulling the diff and refitting etc., which is easier on a rwd car than say a fwd car, and it's about a £1200 job to supply and fit a Quaife diff to a Saab....as a comparison.

Hmmm... Cheers for that. That might be top of the mods list along with the new exhaust then.

I suppose I should stop being such a lazy bd and just call them for a price.

EDIT: Paramount performance now do one for £1500 fitted (+VAT)

For the Record, the posts above contain some inaccuracies and some omissions. These relate to the following:

a. Which companies have the rights to sell and to fit the Quaife patented
Automatic Torque Biasing (ATB) Helical Limited Slip Differential (LSD)
for Jaguar models.

b. The Retail Price.

c. The Timeline for supply.

d. What the ATB LSD does and why it is relevant to Jaguar owners.

A consolidated post will be published on this Topic Thread tomorrow, Weds 18 Feb.

As promised yesterday, here is the revised statement of the situation that applies re the new QUAIFE Limited Slip Differentials, which will shortly be available for a number of recent, and current, Jaguar models.

RT QUAIFE Engineering Ltd, manufacturers of Automatic Torque Biasing (ATB) Limited Slip Differentials, have given Racing Green Cars Ltd and TL Jaguar Ltd exclusive rights to the QDF 4W ATB LSD for the Jaguar X100 (steel-bodied XK8 and XKR). The above two companies have also agreed to supply this product for sale by Paramount Performance Ltd - provided they apply the same deposit and retail price structure(see below). TL Jaguar Ltd will fit QDF 4Ws for Paramount Performance Ltd.

The Retail Price for the supply and installation of a QDF 4W – ordered from any of the above 3 specialist Jaguar companies - will be £1560 + VAT. If a vehicle or a differential is submitted for this upgrade, and it is found that additional, replacement components are necessary, the customer will be advised accordingly.

QDF 4Ws are now in production - with a lead time of 12 to 16 weeks. Orders may be placed with any of the above 3 specialist Jaguar companies from today. Racing Green Cars Ltd and TL Jaguar Ltd will fit these LSDs in strict accordance with a “first come, first served” order list. Holding deposits of £300 will be taken at the time of order, with the balance due on completion of installation.

It is expected that the QUAIFE QDF 4W LSD will also fit the Jaguar V8 XJ and XJR saloons and this will be confirmed as soon as is possible.

The same pricing, lead time and ordering provisions will also apply to the QUAIFE QDF 3W LSD, which fits the Jaguar X150 (aluminium-bodied XK and XKR).

Turning now to the advantages of a QUAIFE ATB LSD.

Many of you will know that modern Jaguars are almost invariably fitted with an “open” differential. If a rear wheel loses traction by spinning, the return to full traction is achieved by computer-influenced reduction of engine power and possibly also by braking the spinning wheel. Clearly this intervention reduces the performance potential of a car – particularly if a standard car has received engine power upgrades.

As a direct replacement for the standard factory “open” differential, QUAIFE’s ATB Helical LSD unit can transform the performance of your car. Unlike a conventional plate-style limited slip unit, the QUAIFE unit relies on gears, rather than clutch plates for its operation.

This means it is much smoother in operation, because, unlike a conventional plate-style LSD, it never locks harshly when a set pre-load of wheel slip is experienced across the driven axle. Instead, it automatically biases the torque away from the spinning wheel to the other driving wheel on the same axle – to a constantly varying degree. And it never locks. The result is superior, controllable traction without “twitchiness” or “snatch”.

Reliability is a "Given" factor. The QUAIFE ATB Helical LSD units are designed using the latest CAD techniques and are CNC machined to ultra-tight tolerances from the very best specification CORUS steel billets. The completed units are then subjected to rigorous in-house inspection on a tri-coordinate measuring machine before being issued.

Such quality means that, unlike a conventional plate-style LSD, a QUAIFE ATB Helical LSD unit requires no special maintenance or rebuilds, is extremely durable and retains the standard method of lubrication. This results in a straightforward upgrade, subsequent easy maintenance and long life.

We hope the above information is helpful and look forward to supplying some of you with a real performance enhancement at economic cost.

With Best Regards,

Chas Whitaker of Racing Green Cars Ltd - Tel: 01252 894 788 or 01252 544 888
Tom Lenthall of TL Jaguar Ltd - Tel: 0118 973 7779
and
Norman Durban

Hello!
Is the Quaife differential available for an 05 XKR?

If so, how much and where do I sent it? It would come to the States - 34429, Florida. You can respond on the forum or email me at dfwx22@gmail.com.

As a second topic, has anyone figured how to lower the rear gear ratio on an XKR without the ECU throwing into restricted performance/limp mod?
Thank you.

Norman,I`m a bit concerned, great idea....but have you checked the ZF auto boxes will be up to that extra torque loading by the new diff.I would have thought the factory would have offered it as an optional extra if it was. No long term testing as yet so its`an unkown quantity in real terms.Good luck with it.
You can buy me a beer Saturday, I`ll be at the Surrey bash with Mrs RW.
