I have a 2008 Polo 1.4Tdi (69bhp) which has covered 66k miles.

I've not had it long, but it could do with a bit more power.

Has anyone had any experience of this type of thing?

Are cheap chips worth the money? I had a £15 one on a previous Fabia VRS but it kept setting the engine warning light off....

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

£15 for a chip yikes

Probably best looking at Bluefin, Revo, Autops for a proper remap.

Get a real remap and stay away from this cheap stuff, it's not good for the engine at all and probably wouldn't deliver the good anyway.

Get an uprated turbo (will need special work to get on to a 3 branch manifold) - fit uprated nozzles on your PD injectors, remove EGR, decat the exhaust, replace backbox with straight pipe, fit a front mount intercooler, sport panel filter, wider air intake pipe (PD160 might fit), Good remap and probably looking at 150bhp. smile

and a good few grand....

Best and easiest thing to do, proper remap (around £350-400)

Yes, there were a few floating round on ebay a few years ago, it was a single plug thing. I bought the car not knowing it was fitted, it was when the light kept coming on that I took it to a dealer who found it!

All sounds too expensive!

I was hoping to hit the 100bhp which a chip/remap shouldn't be too far away from... Do they really give additional MPG as many claim?

The theory on MPG is correct. More boost gives XX power for less throttle. If that makes sense. If you're like me though, you like to use the extra power. biggrin

And it was a bit tongue in cheek. If you had gone for the polo 100hp TDI, that remaps right up to 150bhp (nearly) with a good remap. Its a shame the 1.4 is obviously 3/4 of a 1.9 so lacks the ultimate capability for remapping. 100hp "may" be feasible for you, but I would think more like 95. Bearing in mind the smaller turbo, and 1 less cylinder.

The one in the link (tdi-tuning) is what i bought for my 1.4tdi (75hp). 3rd gear with the box fitted feels like 2nd gear without it. The best thing about it though (IMHO) is the sharper throttle response. i've taken it off a few times only to end up putting it back in hours later because engine felt so gutless and lethargic in stock form. £75 to up the HP from 75 to 95. there are other routes you can take to squeeze out the most HP (110hp being the highest from the 1.4tdi) but there's nothing out there that gives the most bang for the buck.

3 years, 3 months and 2 days between your response and the last response...

I had a 2007 SEAT Ibiza 1.4 TDI (80ps)which I ran a PD160 intake, Green panel filter and Remap on, made 107bhp on a few sets of rollers.

Since had a Stage2 MK2 Leon FR TDI, Stage2+ MK2 leon Cupra R and now a Stage1 MK3 Leon Cupra 280.

Looks like rubbish. Probably changes throttle position sensor that's about it.

I had a blacksmoke remap on a Lupo TDI which costs £50 for the file and you buy a lead off eBay etc. You use a windows laptop to copy your original map and then upload the new file. Will not be as good as a custom map but I find most places are just uploading a generic map anyway. The car was not worth much so did not want to spend £250-£500. Did a rough 30-70 test with a stop watch and knocked just over a second off. I did not notice any different in economy.

alternatively loose weight. from car and driver. Chuck the rear seats in the bin. replace glass with plastic, get rid of window motors, and speakers and aircon and perhaps the dash. And go on a diet yourself.

I use a Fabia 1.4tdi. I can see where you're coming from, and sometimes have thought of looking at a map to 100BHP,but I'D suggest first thing to do is ( if possible) get rid of the front brake set-up and (again if possible) upgrade to the Fabia Vrs front brake set up, BEFORE adding more power. TBH, only place I really notice a problem is at road junctions ,where at normal revs,it's slow to pick up. But if you raise the initial revs, it can take off a lot faster than the 70bhp would suggest.
