I'm currently looking at A4 1.9 tdi 130 Sport's at around the £4-5k mark (02 - 53 plate generally), and there looks to be a few decent examples around with ~100k miles on them. I've had the 1.9 tdi previously in a Bora and know the engines will be good for double this provided they are looked after properly, hence being on the look out for another one....
While I've been looking though, I've noticed that there are loads of 55ish plate Passat's available for around the same money and with similar miles on. The age thing doesn't bother me in the slightest, I'm more interested to hear peoples opinions on the reliability of the later 2.0 tdi lump? I must admit I quite like the look of these, again in sport guise....
I've done some searching and it looks as though there was an issue with the injectors, but I'm guessing that if these were faulty they would either already have been done, or could be swapped under the recall...? Are there any other common issues to watch for on these?
Must admit that I'm still being swung towards the Audi as the 1.9 is generally regarded as bomb proof...
Cheers
Si

The Passat will be quite a lot more modern and the 2.0 TDI was the replacement for the higher powered versions of the 1.9 TDI, so that would be the better car IMO. However for pure dependability the 1.9 is more 'bullet proof'

Of those two cars the A4 is the nicer car (particularly with a few options) although the Passat a fair bit bigger. Audi is better sound deadened than the Passat so the refinement difference between older 1.9 and newer 2.0 engines will be reduced too.

Cheers guys, think I'm going to hold out and keep looking for a nice A4 I reckon, an Avant would be ideal so I can get my mountain bikes in, but they seem even thinner on the ground! Had a search last night and seems to be quite a few reports of oil pump problems on the 2.0 as well, doesn't look like a cheap repair... On another note, whats the opinion on Quattro? Any more / less reliable? I know its the Haldex system so not 'proper' 4wd, but looks as though quite a few are specced with it, just wandering whether I should be put off at all by this due to potential issues / less economical?

I'm pretty sure the 4WD on the A4 is Torsen and not Haldex so real quattro :-)

Ah OK, don't mind being proved wrong when its good news...! I had an S3 a few years back and that was Haldex so just assumed these would be the same, should do my homework before jumping to conclusions! What kind of difference does this make to efficiency, is there much difference in MPG..?

It's only the models with transverse mounted engines that use Haldex. All inline mounted engines use Torsen

I have a b6 1.9 tdi quattro sport avant i use for work and i get approx 60 miles less to a tank than i did my b7 2.0tdi that was fwd,1.9 is a nicer softer power delivery and engines regarded as bombproof, mines on 156k and sweet, quattro eat tyres a little more and dull performance a little but when you need quattro its priceless

Our B7 2.0T Quattro is ok on tyres. The last set lasted 18000, which I think is pretty good.

Yeah, I think I've read that the Quattro does have a slightly smaller tank, so probably not much difference in terms of MPG.
Well, I've seen a couple of cars which I like the look of, and am hopefully going to view one tomorrow night. Any tips on specific things to look out for, or just the usual - servicing, decent tyres, brakes etc?

The 1.9TDI 130 engine is the better of the two

No issues with a 2.0 tdi for 9months and 25k miles. Now on 104k. I dont think the 2.0 is a bad engine.

I bought my daughter an A6 1.9TDI 130 last year, it returns 54.3mpg and gives me the wow factor when driving it. Lovely car, fantastic torquey engine and mot too difficult to work on

..I have to add the choice for me is the 1.9Tdi. My 130bhp sport is going great after 110,000 miles (some may say not run in) I did look into 2.0Tdi vehicles, but after a few sort searches I found common faults were; 1.Tandam fuel pump failure. 2.Oil pump/balance shaft drive chain breaking, 3.EGR valves sticking/failure 4.Cylinder head gasket failure
All the above (repored on Audi A4 vehicles) do turn me off the 2.0Tdi engine. Just make sure you are not buying a Muiltitronic..!

Well, been to look at two cars over the last 2 nights and really like both of them. Was hoping one would be a dog to make the decision easy....!
One is Akoya Blue, is slightly dearer, and has slightly higher miles, but will have full MOT, 6mths tax, 6 mths warranty and the cambelt service will be done (it's at a small garage). 54 plate. Unfortunately, it had the ESP and ABS lights on when I viewed it, a condition of the price was this being sorted. The guy at the garage reckoned it would be a simple sensor, but said he would sort it whatever, should I be put off by this? Obviously I'll check the lights come on when I switch the ignition on to check hes not just removed the bulbs (if you can even do that on new cars...?)
The other is kind of dark blue (almost black) metallic, a bit cheaper, less miles, but not as much kit and will need the cambelt service in 18mths or so. This is probably the very slightly cleaner of the two. 53 plate.
So far think I'm drawn to the Akoya Blue one, just for the advantage of having the (2nd) cambelt service out of the way, and for the warranty aspect. Saying that, I would have no reason to doubt the second car, as it also seemed spot on...
Hate having to make decision, but better than not being able to a find a nice one for love nor money..!
Any input welcome...!
