Considering a move from a E46 M3 to a 2006/7 RS4.
Any pointers!?? Desperately trying to justify it!

I've owned both, the RS4 is a much better car imho.I considered the E90 M3 as a replacement for the RS4 but even that wasn't as good.

I've owned mine for three and a half years now. Wonderful machine. I've had no problems with my DRC suspension, although it is a common issue. I've never had checks for the carbon build up associated with these engines, however the car still feels as powerful and quick as it has ever done (I've driven 45,000 miles in it). It also is as quick as the "on paper" stats suggests - indeed, the Vmax isn't limited to 155, as Audi claim, but 169mph can be reached on the speedo. The only thing that has caused need for a recovery truck was when my clutch let go. Normal servicing is every 2 years, 20,000 miles or when the service indicator says it needs it. I've tracked mine and taken it to the continent many times, plus it's usual daily use but my servicing regime has been once a year (approx 16-17,000 miles). I use it all year, in all conditions. It's fantastic. I've recently switched to Michilen Super Sport tyres over the OEM Pirelli Rossos and upgraded the pads to Pagid RS4-2s. You can really notice the difference and the prices of both upgrades are more or less identical to what Audi charge. I've only had my car attended to by local dealer. I have heard horror stories about some dealers not knowing how to look after these, but I've had no problems with their service I would highly recommend going for one, but would offer the usual caution of ensuring you get a decent example with a good warranty. I've had both the E46 M3 and still have my RS4 after 3 years, longest i've had a car, it's got loads of character and a great blend of performance and practicality. Has to have a Milltek though...  It will be more expensive to run than your M3 though, DRC repairs are expensive, but worth doing as the standard suspension is one of the aspects that make it a great car. I've read quite a few reviews of the B8 RS4, most still hail the B7  PS. Check out my car blog, it's fully costed over the last 3-years.

I realise that a V8 will be more expensive to run, but it is the itch I've got to scratch..

As with any 400+bhp car, you just need to go into with your eyes open It's going to be more expensive to run than a normal run of the mill car, but it'll do everything you could ever want from most cars and leave you grinning ear to ear every time you drive it. The only thing you might find coming from an M3, is that it doesn't shout 'look at me' all the time like the Beemer, but if you're like me, that's a positive and the reason I have one Mine's now on the extended Audi warranty and I've used the value of it several times over, so it's worth trying to get that peace of mind. Gental consumables that are outside of warranty go ; Front discs and pads - £1300 Clutch - £1600 (with DM flywheel) But servicing is fairly cheap and fuel consumption can reach 25mpg Have fun Graeme I can't see myself changing it for a while, but when I do (probably middle of next year) it'll be for one of these as seen at the FOS yesterday ;

E90 M3?
I have had my B7 RS4 Avant for nearly a year. No troubles apart from one thing - the only thing I can't get past on the road is a petrol station! 18 mpg being pretty enthusiastic. 20+ mpg requires the pace not befitting a 4.3 litre V8 & the Milltek cat back exhaust I had fitted soon after buying it...
Otherwise no regrets at all. DRC is fine so far & apart from the roar of the engine when stoked it is a real Q car.
I did look at an E90 M3 as it would probably be a more lively & fun driving experience but the lack of a Touring version meant a no for me. That's as near to a non recommendation as you'll get on an VAG forum!
