They are great cars, but you are better off purchasing a higher motorway mileage example as opposed to a low city mileage example if you want to avoid DPF issues. Big diesels aren't meant for small trips and need a good run. Like everything, a complete service history is very important.
Ensure you purchase one with all the toys too, as this will keep you awake during those long effortless drives! I had mine professionally remapped with the Oettinger remap. It is fantastic; 'Drive' nice and sedate as you would expect, whereas 'Sport' is awesome when you need it for hills and overtaking. Not quite remapped 535d standards, but you do have the huge benefit of AWD in the wet and cold winter months.

Big Diesels just aren't meant for around town. They really need a good run and to get right up to temperature so the DPF can regenerate properly. Short town journeys with a lot of stopping and starting don't allow this, so the DPF tends to become blocked, which then causes loads more issues. It isn't just Audi, same goes with BMWs, Mercs etc. These cars are really designed for long range cruising and need to get up to temp on a regular basis otherwise the soot will just build, plus your economy will never be good.

I'll just have to make sure that I do more of the long runs then - just agreed on the car I tested yesterday! Have lots of 200 odd mile trips to customers coming up over next few months, will just go and see them more often!
