I just can't believe that a company with the resources that VAG has at its disposal has designed a chain-driven cam set-up (which should be miles better than a belt) and managed to completely mess it up. Our old Previa had a chain (as the engine access was limited), and it was still going strong when we sold it at 140,000 miles. Done properly, they should just about last forever. When you add this issue to the well-known DSG problems, you could be forgiven for thinking that VAG's engineering has gone off the rails in recent years. Very disappointing.

Maybe so, but VW is responsible for specifying it, testing it (as part of vehicle development testing), accepting it, and selling it to unsuspecting punters who thought they were buying a well-engineered car. This must be costing them a fortune, as replacement mechatronics units are factory order items, built & set-up to suit a particular model (or so I was told, to justify the car spending almost 6 weeks at the dealers). I'm glad my TVR isn't "as reliable as a Volkswagen"!

I've seen it mentioned in several places - the 1.2 stays with a chain.The new 1.4 switches off a couple of cylinders when cruising.

Nope that's what I thought originally, but if you look it up in ETKA they are using a new belt driven EA211 version of the 1.2 TSI with a different engine code to its chain driven predecessor. Unlikely to be wrong as the data comes from Germany, not the morons in Milton Keynes. Same family as the 1.0 in the UP! etc. Deva Link said:

Yes that's true, I'm looking forward to trying it. Apparently some cars won't get the cylinder de-activation technology though, was reading a review of the new Leon suggesting this.cheechm said:

For the MY2010 cars it became standard for all cars with the 6 speed and 7 speed auto DSG, Bluemotion models and SE BlueMotion Technology models. Otherwise a £90 options
For MY2011 onwards it was standard with all models.
Ok perfect. It is an A so I have a MY2010 model. Therefore, on my 6-speed 1.4 TSI engine I should have hill-start assist?

I've already driven over 750miles since getting the car 3 weeks ago. My service code is QG1 and the last (and only) service was at 16000 miles. It's at 30,000 miles now. Should I be thinking about oil change etc...?

No, as for 2010MY only the 6-speed DSG got hill-start.cheechm said:

QG1 means its on variable 'Longlife' servicing, so the car will prompt when it requires oneIf you want to know when the next variable service is due.
Switch on the ignition, plug in seatbelt to clear seatbelt alarm, if ice alarm is flashing wait until it stops and then hold trip reset for 2 secs and number of miles and time to next service pops up.
I think you may need highline display for this to work.

Took the car to a garage. Tyre fixed for £15 - all good.
Now, I pointed out the scratch on the edge of the panel and the guy reckons it's ben resprayed. Surely when buying a used car from a main dealer this is something they should point out? I feel a bit let down by the dealer who claimed it was accident free and the only problems with the paint work were the small dents probably from someone else's door (or something like that). How should I approach the dealer? Furthermore, could this explain a knocking sound I can hear around the B-pillar?
