Car choice - TT RS or B7 RS4 or R8 V8?
Discussion
I've got an R8 V8 and a classic Mini Cooper as a daily driver.... Love them both, very different cars but great fun in there own way.
I had a Maserati gransport previously. If you want a sense of occasion when driving a car then I would recommend a Maserati fantastic cars..... But the R8 is much more usable.
forget the TT and the RS4 go for an R8 and something else cheap and interesting.

Been thinking about this in the quiet moments over the last few days.
I'm struggling to see how I'd get to use an R8 'regularly'. Trip to Le Mans - yes. Track days - yes. Riding trips in the Alps / Europe - no space for the bikes and kit. I don't have time for 'showing off' at social events as I don't go to any . Still want one though. There's an early silver one in the Audi dealership at the end of my road which is loverly.
RS4 (either saloon or avant) would do everything.
TTRS would do everything until spawn appear (I refuse to struggle with getting child seats in the back of a 2/3-door car). 5-cylinder sound reminds me of the 80s Quattro and Coupes (my dad had one and it sounded great).
Regardless of which, I would most likely keep the Beast for builder's van duties - had 20 bags of sand in it a few months back.

TTRS all the way for me, love it to bits.
Nothing to do with not being able to afford an R8, just love the style, handling and the noise
Lovely looking motor I bet it goes like stink! I've noticed you used to own a TT-S coupe we would have gone for a RS but we had our TT-S brand new in July this year & it's already done 14k miles so thought fuel costs might be a little heavier in the RS, enjoy Nothing to do with not being able to afford an R8, just love the style, handling and the noise
I really rate the TTRS and the RS4 but consider both very different machines to the R8. I can't think many will actually be torn between an R8 and an RS4 for example.
I drive a 911 but as the kids grow will need something more practical so very interested in the RS4 for example, but can't consider the R8, glorious though it is.
The TTRS is no-ones poor relative.

Buy the R8 and a classic Range Rover. Use the 4X4 as your daily, then on high days, holidays and when the Rangie is broken use the R8.I'm struggling to see how I'd get to use an R8 'regularly'. No persuaded?
RS4 then. It's more useful and far better looking than a TTRS which seems to be trying too hard.

Bit of a resurection.
Having spent the week driving the Beast with a broken fuel pressure regulator valve and getting 11-17mpg I won't be getting an RS4 as a do it all car. I don't do a lot of mileage but having now experienced that sort of mpg - no thanks.
R8 and a diesel A2
A2 big enough for the bikes?Having spent the week driving the Beast with a broken fuel pressure regulator valve and getting 11-17mpg I won't be getting an RS4 as a do it all car. I don't do a lot of mileage but having now experienced that sort of mpg - no thanks.
R8 and a diesel A2
997 turbo (Same money as a R8 V8 only blistering performance)
& a Tiguan / Q3 / Rav4 for daily duties & bikes!

Makes perfect Pistonheads sense.
Absolutely!!For me it would have to be the R8 V8 or V10 in manual. The only reservation I would have is the envy of the dross that inhabits our land and their propensity to scratch / damage your car.
Having owned and tracked many many iterations of the VAG platforms including some well modified stage 3 conversions from APR at VAG Motorsport HQ Milton Keynes the R8 platform is in a very different league not only because of weight distribution but the obvious supercar heritage and design. The TT chassis like the Golf and Rocco / S3 TTS /TTRS although good all need work expenditure for track work....the R8 out of the box on cornering chassis dynamics is in a different world and that's what you are investing in.
Residuals are another important consideration. R8'S are mostly hoovering at 40k+ at the moment and have been for some time which indicate they have bottomed out to some extent. Looking at the TTRS it's reasonably good but is still well on the way down. It will level out but everytime I see one I immediately think TT and not something I would hanker after.
Another consideration for an Uber quick vehicle with praticality is a 2-3 yr old RS6...quite rare and easy 700bhp potential.....heavy though and chassis dynamics nowhere near R8.

How life ticks by!
Right, quick update. Ended up getting a Touran diesel for biking / building duties. The Beast is having a 'refresh' and is going to be dedicated business use.
As for the 'fun' one. Still undecided. R8 V10 manual still up there but a couple of TVR's have raised their heads.
Insurance seems to be the ball ache. R8, no problem. 911, no problem. TVR, err, have you got experience of such a car???? Weird. TGhe quotes I have got for a TVR are twice that of an R8 V10.
Anywho, given the spare time I have at the moment it may well be December before I get a toy sorted. Just in time for the snow and ice

my wife has a TTRS PLus Manual - sadly now the only RS with a manual option
Although she has has it since march she doesn't do a lot of miles so the engine is only just starting to loosen up at 2500.
Having not driven it for a while I took it out the other day for a wee run(to get it valeted and fill it up with 98 actually) and was once again amazed at the poise and performance of this little car.
The Plus has a little bit more poke than standard and a sports exhaust - but I am sure I would find a standard car just as impressive.
The main thing that wows is the linear power delivery - any gear, any rpm - it just goes.

Think its horses for courses.
I bought a B7 RS4 from new and loved it. They do look a tad dated now imho.
I now own a brand new TT RS Plus and its a great car, actually looks sporty and special. I dont need the size of an R8 with not too much difference in power.
A V8 R8 (4+ years old) is a nice car but hasn't the cosmetics of the later V10 cars and I think looks dated compared to the currect spec and even the TT RS.
