Ran up to Central London and back this afternoon from Stroud in convoy with the 3.0TDi. (200 mile round trip)

In the real world there is not much difference between the two, especially with passengers on board. The 3.0 is better on fuel as you would expect. The 4.2TDi had to work hard a few times to keep up.

You're not really comparing apples with apples there though are you. Your 3.0 is nearly new, your 4.2 is an old shape that's covered about 200k. The new shape 3.0 and 4.2 are both substantially quicker and more powerful than their predecessors.

Try to get one with the safety options like lane assist and adaptive cruise as it makes the car on long journeys. Night vision though is pointless IMO .

They are both old shape so them apples is the same. I know the 4.2 has over 200k on it but it is still tight and rattle free. A passenger would not notice that itbisma high mileage.

The new shape ones are quicker but lack the useable boot space of the old shape and the early ones only had space savers IIRC. I have been putting off going for the newer shape because of these reasons.

Apologies, I thought you'd got yourself one of the new shape ones now. smile

I put a deposit down on a 2010 4.2 tdi last Friday - delivery this Friday hopefully.

I also couldn't find anything else that delivered the same level of power and luxury for the price.

Congrats smile

Do post up pictures and your first impressions.

Regards the 4.2tdi mpg Q, I did 370 miles this weekend driving from Leeds to Aylesbury and averaged 37.6 mpg. Trip included driving down at 80 in cruise, some general A and B road driving, then a spirited drive back home. Am sure if return drive had been sensible using cruise like trip down then 40+ would be very possible.

Bringing this thread back to life as I'm considering buying a new shape 4.2tdi with the 385ps engine and was wondering what gains are achievable and who was best to use for a remap?

Cheers

Chipper by name and nature?
I know power corrupts etc, but do you really want to be hacking in to a new A8? They are reasonably swift out the box!
The only outfit i would trust would be DMS, especially as the 385 has not been out long, and most other tuners are not up to speed with it yet as it is a realively rare choice of lump compared to the 3.0 most go for (although after trying both, the V8 was a no brainer for me)
Are you buying new, hence the thread on LED lamps?
If so, my advice would be save £30k and buy a dealer demo ( unless you can get a good discount on an order).
Saw a 14 plate car with 5k milkes with Bose, 20 inch wheels, in grey with the LED lamps and a few other choice goodies for £45k, would have chalked up near £80k going by the price lists!!
