In reality by the time you get the car any run in damage will have already been done, the first 20 or so miles are the most important, and if you are having the car delivered then expressed it to be thrashed then anyway, so how you run it in after that (imo) would not make all that much difference.

Should still be on track for Tuesday, sure hope so. Away until Tuesday so time will hopefully fly :].

Agreed mine came with 10 miles on it but it was already set in race mode off the trailer and the mpg was showing 13 mpg over the last 10 miles.

When I told them it was for the wife the VW tech warned against it being driven too sedately early doors especially early doors. Said these engines are especially prone to carbon build up so advised make sure to warm it up fully (engine oil temp 90+) and progressively use the rev range all in the first 20 miles, all the way up but go careful on brakes.

After the PDI it is taken for a short run and they don't hang about!

Well having spoken to the dealer, my build has taken 3 weeks so my revised delivery date is 3rd week in August - I told them they could hold it a week and so I will have a 64 plate arriving 1 September.

So only 6 weeks more to wait - bearing in mind my order was processed 9 April that's a rather slow 19 week lead time for a low spec car.

Wow that is long. I'm told I should expect mine late September. I'm hoping that's the case but if it slips into october then fine.

I used to think this but in my experience this is the complete opposite. Years ago ran in 2 identical company cars with a mate, mine was broken in gently, his was properly thrashed from the word go.

After 5,000 miles we did a little experiment. My mates was quicker to 60, smoked less and at 70 mph on the same motorway stretch with cruise on over 5 miles he returned 1.2 mpg more than me!

Changed my run in style from that point on!
Ah okay, interesting! well I won't smash it for the first 100 miles, but then I'll surely but steady give her a good hammering!

Ordered mid June and I have been told unconfirmed build date of 13th Oct delivery end of November. When I ordered I was told delivery in September.

Not very happy and I have a very long wait. frown

Do you know what dealer your order was placed with as that sounds like a really long wait? I ordered at the beginning of June but I've still not got a confirmed build week yet.

Hey all - thought I'd jump on the thread with my first post.

Ordered a Golf R couple of weeks ago, Lapis Blue, DSG, Reversing Camera, Pro Sat Nav and the Chassis... 4k off list, delivery date expected November!

I've spanked mine since 40 miles in. 1700 miles later I'm averaging just under 38mpg on my drive to work (33 miles m25 fairly free with some town driving). No oil loss, smoke and feels very lively. I say go for it smile

All my new cars have been red lined from delivery. Never had a issue with an engine.

May have been appropriate back in the 70s and 80s but don't see the point with a modern car. Old wife's tales are hard to shake when people keep spouting the same old guff.

I'm pretty sure they run-in all engines now in modern factories. Saw something on 'how things work' or 'how stuffs made' on discovery channel. I forget what it's called, but I'm pretty sure it was Chevrolet. If the yanks can do that, then I'm sure the Germans do - being so efficient!

I've had my V5 come back today confirming that my current cars registration has reverted to te original plate from the private plate that was on there. Anyone have an idea if that means the dealership have received their bits today to enable registering the new Golf R with my private plate? Any experience of this?

Hoping this means my car can come a week early!

Yeah that's fair chaps, I know new engines are hammered before they install them in to the bulk head these days. Don't wanna blow it up tis all! feel confident and 38 is beautiful MPG lol. Cannot wait now.

I should add that the drive back home is nearer 33 mpg as that tends to be in race mode with a fairly aggressive attack on any free stretches of tarmac. Given the pace I'm going at I'm still pretty fking impressed with it!

Hi all,

Long time lurker here, just wanted to say my R is at Emden awaiting a ship to the UK! Never driven one so it's hopefully going to be a pleasant surprise :-)

Cheers

If I manage to get 38mpg on my commute, which sounds similar to his, I will be ecstatic.

Was banking on around 30mpg.

I did all my calcs on 30mpg too, I'm also interested how it performs with 95ron instead, as 144p per litre was a tad hard to chew lol.

Only 2days Rhys...then she will be with usmile

I'd stay well away from 95 mate! it's specified to run on 98, I know it's 15p a litre, but that's only 6/7 quid on a tank, worth it.
