Lease on Golf R
Discussion
So the good people at VW swindon have given me a chance to test drive a manual 7R tomorrow. I've already got a manual R on order and am due to get it in feb fingers crossed, I've only briefly driven a dsg and it was good but I fancied a more involving drive. What do people think, should I go for a drive and potentially spoil the surprise or go for it and have fun?

Have you ordered it through VW Swindon?Yes I ordered through swindon in October....Well I went for the test drive, all 3 hours of unaccompanied fun! All I can say is wow. For all those that have been waiting a long time, hold out!! It is totally worth it. I have driven a lot of cars and owned motorbikes and nothing has come close to the R for fun factor and it's very comfortable too.
The build quality is excellent and the drive is smooth when u want it to be and if you want ferocious it'll do that no problem. I managed to do about 85 miles of mixed road driving constantly in race mode (naturally) and only used a tenners worth of fuel so pretty good IMO. It sounds incredible when you boot it and has a subtle burble around town, it certainly gets attention!! Mostly from audi drivers trying to enter a pissing competition. Needless to say they were dispatched with little effort! (Four pipes beats four rings) especially the TT driver with dolly bird in passenger seat, I thought the test drive might spoil the surprise but all it has done is confirm my choice especially the manual box. Hurry up build week 2!! I need my R in my life immediately

A very exciting morning in the JQ house, I've just jumped from Stage 2 to Stage 4 - Build in Progress, got a text this morning with confirmation. Anyone know how long from Stage 4 to delivery? VW build tracker is not showing an update.

Same here got the text this morning saying im now at stage 4, although the tracker website is showing stage 3.ta
As someone who's never leased a car (but is increasingly attracted to the idea), can anyone help me understand why there's such a difference in some of the prices I'm seeing in this thread and the price on the finance calculator on VW's website? By default a three door manual R is looking like a £3k deposit and £464.98/month which seems a lot more than what people here are being offered. So what's the reason people are getting such a significant difference in price to that?
Steven - its a big thread so hard to follow but in essence:
- Up until end of October VW was offering a stonking lease deal
- The deal has ended and so prices are now higher (the GFV is lower)
- not all dealers offered the same deal even during October
- the leasing arrangement is/was a PCH deal not PCP
- Dont think the PCH was ever on the website for quotes
- During October a basic spec (ie manual 3 door in red) could be had for £150 ish per month plus VAT plus a deposit (c£2K).

So where is the best place to go through for PCH deals? Would those in the know suggest a broker or PCH through VWFS?
If I'm being honest you won't get one anymore as the deals finished sharp and the wait for one is now around 6 months. The best you can maybe do is ring round brokers/dealers to see if they have any cancelled orders.rampantdidact said:

Fair enough, I'll have a word with my local dealer and see what they can come up with.Saw one of these on the road today think it mistook my A4 for an S4 due to the mirrors as drivers was trying to coax me into a traffic line grand-prix.
Suffice to say it looked indecently rapid off the line for a hatchback the driver looked about 12 years old which must be a result of these cheap lease deals. Bet they are a lot of kids living at home with a Golf R on the drive...

I've seen a few around here now, and unfortunately most appear to be driven by idiots. I have never understood the drive around looking for people driving slower cars to race attitude. Suppose tis just the same as when the Civic TypeR was popular - and the Impreza. Cheap fast cars always attract the young wannabe Hamiltons and us enthusiasts get tarred with the same stty brush.Suffice to say it looked indecently rapid off the line for a hatchback the driver looked about 12 years old which must be a result of these cheap lease deals.
