That is a pretty good deal I'd say. Guess it depends whether you want/need any additional options and what impact this has.
Would like pan roof, heated seats and bluetooth phone.
Quattro would be nice too if they make one at some point.

Not exactly in depth, but this is the first review I've seen of the Ultra.
Having never owned a diesel before, it's hard to make an informed call, but I was fairly impressed with the refinement. I haven't driven a 6 cylinder a6 so can't draw a comparison but its pretty smooth for a 4. Gearbox is cracking, steering is pretty lifeless, but then it's a big, diesel estate.

Diesel is the 'only' choice for a big estate load lugger. I've got my eye on the Ultra Avant 2.0D. My current ride is an E-Class 250D Estate and I can't imagine it gets us us to the South of France any slower than an AMG or RS6 Avant once speed cameras and fuel stops are accounted for. Cruises at 90 without breathing hard, has all the low-end grunt needed to escape tailgating Clios and getting to pole position in the race from the toll booths. And £35,000 cheaper than the AMG.

I've had mine a month now. There are a few pics in the 'show us your audi' thread.

I've started to push it a little more as just creeping towards the 1000 mile mark, and it goes pretty well. Unless I'm in town I keep the gearbox in S pretty much all the time as otherwise it shuffles through the gears so quickly that I've been caught out a few times when trying to get up to speed from a slip road joining a motorway/a road etc.

You're basically in 7th at about 40 if you leave it in D.

I've been really impressed with the damping too. It's firm, but there still feels like a decent amount of wheel travel. Sure it's a heavy/big car but it still shuffles down a B road without feeling like it's out of its comfort zone. There is a road leading up to devils dyke in Brighton that is a great test - lots of dips/compressions and off camber corners etc and at 7/10ths it feels incredibly composed.

In reality it's a big old barge, so never going to take it to 'the edge' but nice to still be able to enjoy driving. I have come from a Clio Trophy followed by an R26 and then a Chimaera (all pre kids!) and then the bargain basement c320 which I kind of fell in love with weirdly, so enjoy my driving.

I am finding myself being very pleased about small things too. Loving having an iPod plugged in via the AMI. The Bose is great and the interface works brilliantly.

Loving the seats and general interior. It is hard keeping the piano black clean and smudge/dust free though.

Kids seem very happy in the back and there is plenty of space, the power boot is also something that I never thought I'd need and now would hate to live without. So glad it's standard spec now as I wouldn't have bothered otherwise.

I'm still pining a little for a petrol though so just need to spend a little more time with the diesel I think. Hoping in a few years an s6 or similar might be within reach, but for now I'm just very pleased that I didn't end up in an Octavia!! wink

That's interesting, so the power boot is now standard. We have it on our 2008 A6 and it's great.

Are the AMI and Bose also standard?

They are on the black edition. Not sure about the AMI, but Bose is a £1k option otherwise.

The only other options I kind of wish I'd gone for are the advanced key and the reversing camera.

I ordered my A6 Saloon black ed in Daytona grey with chrome 20" alloys (the titanium look wheels look like brake dust to me and are a bit too common).
Does anyone know why there are no fog lights on this model? Foreign pics show fog lights and I think the front looks a bit too plain without them...

The black edition has 'all weather' lights as part of the main unit. They're excellent. The space where the fogs would live is for cars with ACC I think. They use the space for the radar mounts.

Mine arrives today! Have read 3 reports on the Ultra now, only CAR slating its dynamic abilities whilst ignoring the refinement of the new engine, whilst Autocar's report is very positive which has perked me up again.

The reviews always mention inferior dynamic driving/feel compared to bmw. I personally think that it's lazy on reviewers part and it's a reputation thing.

I currently drive a bmw 5 series which is a great drive to be fair... Having test driven the a6 black ed I can safely say that there isn't much in it if you don't drive like a ralley driver! One thing for sure thou, 20" wheels means a firmer/bumpier ride on the a6. That's the price you pay for the beastly look thou!

Our Daytona Grey S-Line was delivered last Sunday

I can't drive it for a while (medical conditions unfortunately) but first impressions from the passenger seat are that it's a very nice & comfy car on the road. We have the standard 18"s on the S-Line, and is a much smoother ride than the last gen A6 S-Line Special Edition with 19"s

Extra's were kept to heated seats and music interface, and heated steering wheel. Wife hasn't tried her heating steering wheel yet, which was one feature she insisted on biggrin

Economy seems good as well at this early stage - just under 50mpg displayed in the DIS on the usual 30 mile commute.

Had the rear windows tinted before delivery at 20% tint to keep the dog cool as well - cost of £175 was a bargain, and a quality job carried out

Couple of Vagcom tweaks carried out as well - locking alarm chirp, gauge needle sweep, turning on the cornering lights in the xenon headlamps, and will play around with the power tailgate settings so it can be raised and lowered just by using the remote key

Less then 24hrs in the Avant and I'm very pleased. The engine and gearbox are great. You certainly don't feel like your driving a basic combination or that its a four cylinder. The DSG changes are smooth and rapid and it always has enough punch irrespective of speed or gear, it doesn't seem as if it needs to change down 2 or 3 cogs like the XF which makes for a more refined progress. The wife loves the interior quality, thinks its better finished then the 5 series we had, I think she's correct. I didn't think the 17s and the SE suspension has improved the ride that much over the Sport, but then I found the car settings and pressed comfort, whilst not a massive difference it does seem to smooth out the initial shocks, perhaps its a placebo effect, but perception is 9/10ths of reality. This is my first new Audi since the 100CD back in 88, glad to see they've improved the air circulation since then and they've certainly moved forward since my wife's '06 A4 Cab. Love the Pano roof, the DAB, the dials, even the standard audio is more then enough for an ex DJ. Only gripe, storage space for wallet keys fags etc etc. Will post some photos in due course once I detail it properly.

we've had a 177 Black avant for 3 weeks now. its a great do everything car, although the boot smaller than expected. the 10mm extra drop of the sport suspension on the S-line is worth it, and the ride isn't too bad.
options we had heated seats, rear blinds, tow bar, pano roof.
roof is nice, heated seats a must and the tow bar clever.

the standard satnav and Bose is good, with music from all sources SD/SD2 or Iphone, Bluetooth streaming etc very easy to use.

engine is fine for plodding around, but is all low down, i think it would work well with a ZF 8spd, but couldn't bring my self to spec an elastic band CVT!

Hi,
I've got a Daytona grey A6 Ultra Black edition on order but thinking of going to black.
Can anyone tell me if the car above is Brilliant or Phantom black please?

Cheers

A quick update at 7,500 miles in.
My wife has done most of the miles, but a few observations.

Overall a great car, much better than previous Avensis and 3.0 tdi Vectra estates.

The cornering is great, for a family bus, very flat. Quite fun to hussell.
The engine doesn't have the punch of previous Vag 2.0s, and 1.9s
Have averaged 43.5mpg, verses a 51mpg from the wife's previous leon 2.0 170 tdi, hopefully this will get better with miles. perhaps it's the extra weight?
With the bikes on the back, low frequency compressions make it feel like the front and back axels are doing different things.
Grip on the front in the damp out of junctions is poor, it'll be getting some winter tyres, in the autumn.
Towed the car trailer, with a ramp on it (c1ton), it struggled with grip out of up hill junctions in the dry, wouldn't like to tow the track car too far with it (c2ton)

Interesting, I prefer it to phantom black, brilliant black looks deeper somehow but several threads on the subject suggest phantom is better.

How are you finding it ck? Does it show swirls badly?
If I do get brilliant black I'm thinking of getting it sealed.

Cheers
