Evening chaps - my 2009 Scirocco makes a short squeal when pulling away while cold - it is a high pitched screech, and seems to sound at the top of the travel of the clutch. The car has a VW Approved warranty. My friend who owns a Golf GTI has had exactly the same issue.

Has anyone on here experienced the same issue? It only does it for 5 minutes or so until the engine is warmed up - the warranty says that the Clutch pressure plates and bearings are not covered - the clutch has never slipped before, and is smooth to pull away and change gear, which leads me to believe it is a mechanical fault rather than normal wear and tear so should be covered under warranty (the car has done 45k).

After some reading around only, I have had "TPI 2024969/2 - 12 Jan 2012" quoted, which is covered by warranty, but I do not know how to find what that actually says.

Would appreciate any tips or advice before I send it into the garage, especially if people have had the same issue and got it fixed for free! smile

Cheers, Ed

I'd say release bearing too, I've got a faint whine from the clutch on my TFSI and I think it's probably a release bearing on it's way out.

Intake manifold flap is a very common issue and relatively expensive to fix. Lucky it's under warranty although I would expect VW to offer goodwill if it had been out of warranty as it's a known issue.

I thought intake flap was a cheap one? Certainly wasn't that expensive when I was looking. Labour seems easy enough too.
Actually thinking about it that might be the TFSI.

Not great news. It was diagnosed as the clutch (just from a sound though) - and therefore not covered by the Approved All Components(!) Warranty.
I gave them the TPI number, but did not make any difference - I have emailed VW Warranty and Customer Services to try and get some information, but they would not give it to me, as it is for 'internal reference only'. I could also not be emailed the issues they diagnosed, because it was a warranty query... Would be interested if anyone has a copy of this TPI.
So that would be £900 to have them repair.

Other issues:
Intake Manifold Flap retailer believed would be covered under warranty.

Oil leak near turbo I pointed out - turned out to be from the turbo intake valve, I was told that 'oil leaks' were not covered and it would be nearly £400...
This was not in my Ts&Cs of my warranty, and on phoning the warranty they said it should be covered, so I hope this was just a mistake.

It is currently with the warranty people to give permission to do the work - so I should hear from them this week - but this is really putting me off future approved VWs, and there seems to be a general lack of interest in fixing problems that don't make the engine light come on...

Hi,
I have the dreaded clutch screech on my scirocco, which has an approved VW extended warranty. They want me to approve £500 labour before they go any further with a warranty claim. Did you end up footing the cost of the repair yourself or did you take it further with VW? Based on your experience I suspect I might be better off just taking it to an independent and paying (less) for a new clutch/release bearing myself. It's really frustrating though as it appears to be a common issue.

2colours - me too , mine is out of Warranty so i am reluctant to fit the bill to get it fixed , unless absolutely necessary.

Coming into summer though and the warmer weather , the noise is less apparent and sometimes non existent. It seems to be worse during the colder months and only happens when taking off/Reversing on a slight incline.

I have had this problem for a year now , if not longer! It has not affected how the car has driven in any way.

I did not get it fixed, as just pointed out above, it only happened when the engine was cold, so much less in the summer - and did not affect launching or changing gear.

The intake manifold flap was fixed under warranty.

The turbo intake valve was fixed under warranty after many hours arguing (had to phone up the VW warrenty HQ and get them to talk some sense to the garage!). Ridiculous amount of effort though, it seems as though if there is no engine light on as far as they are concerned there cannot be a warranty claim. The irritating part is they would have ended up stealing £400 off most people.

Anyway, the warranty expired last year - and a house brick fell off my house and dented in the roof.

Long story short I threw my rattle out of the pram and traded it in for an Up!. The bodywork and clutch costs were going to be the same price as the money lost on the trade in. furious
