2.0TFSI Oil Consumption
Discussion
I have fairly recently bought a 2011 B8 A4 that had 35k on the clock. It is now just under 38k miles and in that time I have put in just under 3ltrs of oil. This really seems excessive to my eyes but have read that modern petrol engines do use some oil. My car is booking in with Audi on Thursday to have a rattle fixed under warranty and to start an oil consumption trial.
I know there are many threads on this out there, but just curious to know, what 'fixes' have been offered to improve high oil consumption levels and what I need to be pushing for?

You can only 'push' for AUdi to reduce consumption to a level that they consider acceptable (up to 0.5l/1000km is acceptable).
In the first instance Audi will check for leaks, fit the new PCV (engine breather) and update the ECU software to suit. You will then be asked to do no more than 621 miles and return to the dealer for them to measure oil consumption exactly.
If the vehicle has used more than what Audi deem acceptable you could be looking at new pistons and rings (there is a revised design).
If your car after having the new PCV fitted consumption does become normal we've found that switching to a 5w40 further improves matters.

Well car dropped off at the dealer this morning after completing the 600 mile (1000km) oil consumption trial. I checked the level on the computer before I left and it had dropped from full to just below 1/4 in that time, which from experience is around 0.7/0.8ltr. Hopefully they deem this to be on the high side and look to complete some remedial work.
To be honest I am not entirely sure, I collected the car very late in the day and only the one service assistant was around and he didnt know exactly what was carried out. The software I think has had an update as the oil level screen gave a message stating that an accurate level could only be found once the engine was warm which I had never seen before.
Well they have confirmed that new pistons and rods will be replaced along with various other parts all under warranty. They will give me a parts breakdown once completed. Sounds like quite an involved task and I am just glad I have warranty cover.
Does anyone know why the pistons and rods are being replaced, I assume this is due to a design change?
Just a question, are there any other 'while you are there' jobs that I should get done at the same time while the engine is open?

The problem with this engine is the rings are made of chocolate. The rings wear, which causes the oil to be burnt. Eventually the pistons tip in the bore at the top of travel, allowing the piston to just touch the cylinder wall. From here on the thing is doomed. The bad ones need a new engine because the bores are damaged and they can't be bored out to remove the damage and fitted with oversize pistons.
A friend has changed lots of these engines for the problem you have experienced, 30k miles onwards. I seem to recall he said Audi were replacing pistons & rods rather than the whole engine if they could get away with it.

You areabsolutely correct. The bad ones need a new engine because the bores are damaged and they can't be bored out to remove the damage and fitted with oversize pistons.

Affect's all 2 litre TFSI units in A4'S A5's etc 2007 onwards until 2012 untill they changed a whole host of internal items.
M8 of mine has just bought an A5 with 100k full Audi SH and it drinks oil. Rings are the issue according to Audi who have suggested piston, rods etc...but won't pay on a 2007 car.....good job my m8 only paid under trade money....it's a 210 model I believe.

My 05 2.0 TFSI quattro has barely used any oil over the last 20k, I was thinking about the same in a used B8 but maybe not.M8 of mine has just bought an A5 with 100k full Audi SH and it drinks oil.
