2.0TFSI Oil Consumption

You areabsolutely correct.
Affect's all 2 litre TFSI units in A4'S A5's etc 2007 onwards until 2012 untill they changed a whole host of internal items.
M8 of mine has just bought an A5 with 100k full Audi SH and it drinks oil. Rings are the issue according to Audi who have suggested piston, rods etc...but won't pay on a 2007 car.....good job my m8 only paid under trade money....it's a 210 model I believe.
A3s as well.Affect's all 2 litre TFSI units in A4'S A5's etc 2007 onwards until 2012 untill they changed a whole host of internal items.

I've seen pictures of one of the engines that came apart, what a mess! witness marks on bore and piston, chunks of rings missing completely, in one case the crown of the piston was damaged. The whole thing was scrap at 30k. If it continues bearings (or some metal) end up in the oil.
this is just one of the common problems he sees, cam chain tensioner failure is another. Anyone who still thinks VAG stuff has an upper hand in quality and reliability has a shock coming!
My car booked in for the work on Monday.
Many thanks for explaining to me the reasoning behind the changing out of the pistons, makes sense. I will be sure to ask about the bores and see if they can provide some photos.
I think it will get the belt replaced while its there, seems to make sense. What kind of service interval is the aux belt and water pump on?

Hi folks. In August 2014 I purchased a 2010 A5 cabriolet 2lt engine car with 50,000 on the clock from an independent dealer. In 1300 miles it has used 5l litres of oil. Yes, five litres. I have read many posts about crank sensors, breathers, pistons and rings on many sites and believe that due to the high volume of my consumption it must be piston rings. Currently the car is with an audi dealer to have the crank sensor, crank oil seal replaced, and software updated. We are also starting an oil consumption test. I do not want to sell the car to another person and pass on the problem. I have decided that should the consumption test show, which I know it will, that the rings are intact made of chocolate! I will pursue audi to rebuild the engine. I have been advised by others to pursue the independent garage but I feel that this is unfair. They just sold me a car they had bought to sell on. I believe that the fault has inherent from the day the car rolled out of the factory.
I need to contact as many other owners with the same problem as possible to build a case, legal if need be to make Audi foot the entire rebuild cost. Futile perhaps. Misguided maybe but I must try. I believe Audi in some cases are providing the parts but the owners pay the labour. £2-3,000. I believe this to be injust. Please contact me if you have had or having similar problems. Email dpsmith060@aol.com. Or mobile 07790 005952. Thanks in advance.

Guess Im a lucky one.
Have a 09 B8 A5 2.0 TFSI and it uses less than 1ltr every 2000 miles. It now has just over 20k miles on the clock also. Up till last week I was running my own test. Reset the ODO last time I topped up and see how many miles I did before it needed topping up. Got down to ¼ on the MMI gauge and around 1800 miles so decided to stop the test and top up as its best to keep them topped up.
Have you seen in the US, Audi have settled and are sorting this for cars with certain engine codes.

Ashame this issue - afterall what are Audi thinking having designed several earlier very successful TFSI's why now with the B8 should this be happening, they are hardly new hands in this area? Does this affect cars like GTi also?
I too was considering a TFSI in B8 guise having owned & run two excellent earlier reincarnations B5 & B7 TFSI which consumed hardly any oil at all worthy of note and exhibited no wear after many years/miles.
Also be interested to note where these engines sit in current range? Previously TFSI were performance variants below S4. They now appear to be the run of the mill petrol power plants that the 1.8 & 2.0 N/A used to serve. My last B7 put out 220ps, the B8 appears to be much larger in size & running less power (and reliability it seems)?

Wifes 07 TT uses a little oil, though saying that I have in the last 6 weeks had to replace the PCV valve after it threw up an engine code, lumpy idle and miss-fire. PCV cured those faults but have yet to check the oil consumption since.
I'd guess Ive put about 2 ltrs in over 3-4 K, not good, but much better than my Honda which was (until after a hone and new rings) emptying the sump every other tank!

The normal GTI, yes, but I believe things were improved for the 2007 model year. The Edition 30 got the same engine as the S3 (8P), which had revised pistons and rings as part of a strengthening package. This engine isn't as oil thirsty.

What the feck is B7, B8 etc. As far as I'm aware they aren't official nomenclature.
AFAIK the problem in on 2.0 TFSI engines from mid 2000s to 2012. Mostly A3s but A4s as well I believe. Don't know about VWs as this stuff I have seen is from an Audi dealer.

The issue affects the longitudinally installed 'valvelift' version of the EA888 series 2.0TFSI. This engine entered production in 2008.
This engine is installed in 'B8' chassis cars including the A4, A5 & Q5.
The US 'settlement' is a bit of a cop out in that Audi have only said they will carry out an engine breather modification FOC, not re-build engines with worn piston rings.

Indeed. But there appears to be a warranty extension to 8 years/80,000 miles as well, which seems more important.Personally, I'm in a bit of a quandary: I've had my '09 A4 2.0TFSI for 3 years now, and oil consumption has gone from about 1L/5000 miles to 1L/2000 miles. Still "within spec" but the trend isn't encouraging.
Is it actually worth getting the consumption checked and possibly the breather mod done? Or is now a good time to PX the car and let somebody else worry about it.
Related: Are independent warranty companies picking up the tab for these rebuilds, or are they claiming it's an Audi design fault so they're not liable?
