Hi everyone,

I picked up my 2010 S5 S-Tronic Convertible on Monday and love it. The sound of the engine alone is incredible! I have a few questions though that hopefully someone can help with? I swapped my 2010 S3 for the S5 so I think some of these Q's are simply because it's a different car.

1 - When switching from N to D the car shunts every so slightly as the gear is selected - is this normal? My S3 was S-Tronic and didn't do this although my understanding is that it is a totally different gearbox on the S3 - my S3 was 6 speed but the S5 is 7 speed. This happens whether the engine is hot or cold.

2 - I could never get the front wheels in the wet (unless the conditions were awful) to spin on the S3 however I can a little on the S5, is this normal? The S3 has the Haldex system whereas I believe the S5 has the Torsten four-wheel drive so, again, this could be normal.

3 - The poxy heating/fan combination disobeys me! I have "auto" turned off and set it to what I want but then catch it changing the fan speeds! What is wrong?

4 - gear selection (from N to D or D to R) seems slower than from my S3. Is this normal?

5 - With the roof down, does the alarm still work when the car is locked? I've looked in the manual but can't find the answer. I read elsewhere that there should be a button in the doorwell but I don't have any.

Thanks!

5. Keep the roof up when parked, alarm aside my experience of parking with the roof down is most people seem to mistake the car for a spittoon!

Dude, you're overthinking this, put the top down and go for a nice long drive, enjoy the car - if there are any problems the little lights on the dash will tell you smile

LOL - totally agree... when the weather picks up :-)

Just wanting to find out if this is all normal for the car.

My S4 does that too so I think that is the way they are meant to work rolleyes

You can feel the clutch engaging but it shouldn't be abrupt or lurch. What it should feel like is sitting stationary in a manual car with a foot on the brake and raising the clutch to its biting point. If rather than a torque converter like 'pull' against the brakes it feels like a thump or a lurch it could suggest an issue.

OK, let me try to explain it better...

I can hear the gear being selected and I can feel it when inside the car as if the car shuddered ever so slightly. The car does not jerk/lurch/move forwards at all.

Curiously though, my S3 was silent with this.

What's the mileage? Could be overdue a gearbox service?

38000 on the clock. The noise it makes does not sound unusual or worrying and I suspect this is expected behaviour. After having the gearbox on the s3 I wanted to know if the s5 version is different.

On the service note... the dealer jut MOT'd and serviced the car and it came back all OK. I have a 12 month warranty on the car, would a gearbox fault be covered by the warranty or is it "normal wear and tear"?

The 'jerk/judder' I referred to is more a feeling through the pedal than forward motion. At 38k it's dead on for a gearbox oil change now.

Incredibly difficult to describe these sort of things on the tinterweb so probably worth asking someone at a dealer/specialist that knows the car really well to drive it and offer an opinion.

Thanks, Dr G. There is actual forward motion so it sounds like it is not a problem however I will check this weekend when the gearbox oil was last changed.

The climate control fan is still on auto, change the fan speed manually, there is a little triangle next to the fan number when you take it off auto. Once you move it off the triangle it's fully off auto. Does that make sense?

Picked up the s5 from theaudi dealer yesterday. The issue with the gearbox turned out to be the mechtronics unit (don't know the specific fault with it).

So I got a new one installed and gearbox oil replaced smile the engineer said it took the over a day to get the gearbox off and dismantled, then they fitted the unit and rebuilt. With troubleshooting and waiting for parts they had it just over a week.
