B7 RS4 Avant or B8 S4 Avant
Discussion
So... having taken your collective posts and the very good points made in them, on board;
I ignored the vast majority of them, made a stupid decision and bought a B7 RS4...
I couldn't be happier. Within 15 minutes of picking it up I was hammering across the moors in the driving rain (which helpfully stopped briefly for photos)and it never put a foot wrong, apart from almost collecting a pheasant, which you can't really blame the car for.
Its just a lovely place to be.
Even the fuel economy isn't terrible.
I wasn't sold on the Avus Silver, my preference has always been for Daytona Grey, but now I think it just looks right.
Even Mrs. Gecko has decided it was the right choice. Apparently it "smells nice", which is a good thing.
There are a couple of small things I want to do to it, all cosmetic, but otherwise I think I might (whisper it), have bought a decent car for the first time in about 10 years.

Nice one
Now, if you want to get all the hp out of it may I be so cheeky as to suggest a chat with the team at MRC in Banbury?
I did that & got it back decoked, with an aftermarket manifold to stop it doing it again, a Milltek cat back exhaust (go for the valved one or the drone will annoy you when you want to be quiet) & a remap with only a few more hp but more torque. Oh, and £5k poorer. The decoking was the most expensive bit.
Enjoy!

You would not of enjoyed ripping across the moors in a b8,the drc in the rs4 isn't without problems but it an awesome set up blending unbelievable comfort given the superb handling. You have made the right choice,it will impress you more over the coming months as you realise how well it hides the speed effortlessly and how awesome the chassis is when pushed, tuning at Mrc is very worthwhile.

What? - having just picked up a B8.5 S4 I can assure you that he would have enjoyed blatting across the moors in one. I took mine out last night for a short spirited drive and having owned B5 RS4's, M3's etc.. the B8 S4 is a proper weapon. You would have to be driving with a death wish to need anything quicker on the road A to B.I've also owned a b5 rs4 and several m3s and non are a patch on the sweet spot handling of the b7 I'm afraid,b5 was not great at all,m3 good but only when right surfaces and weather so pretty flawed in the uk overall.Yes the b8 s4 is a lovely drive I'm sure but take a decent b7 out over a challenging road a few times you see what I mean.
Very nice sir.
The RS4 is defiantly the one to have, people can talk till they're blue in the face about remapped S4's but will they be the ones walking away from the car turning around and thinking, yeah, that's a sweet looking car... I think not.
I'm biased though I'm picking up my new B8 RS4 on Saturday.

Having owned and 'walked away' from an R8 and and an RS6 , and having turned down a new RS4 - I'm happy to own an S4. It was a no brainer The RS4 is defiantly the one to have, people can talk till they're blue in the face about remapped S4's but will they be the ones walking away from the car turning around and thinking, yeah, that's a sweet looking car... Is agree entirely. An rs4 in either b7 or b8 guise us a totally different experience to an s4 whether it's chipped or notThe RS4 is defiantly the one to have, people can talk till they're blue in the face about remapped S4's but will they be the ones walking away from the car turning around and thinking, yeah, that's a sweet looking car... Chipped s4 may be just as quick in a straight line, but misses the look, sound and feel of an RS model
I believe Chris Harris smoked the gearbox on his recently too, so that would cast doubts over the reliability of modified s4s too
OP, you made the right choice

All the best with it.

MrsTwo likes the smell of Audis too. Skodas on the other hand get a thumbs down in the smell department.Congrats on the new car, it's lovely. I'm afraid my head is winning the head/heart battle of S4/RS4.
