Hi all

I believe it's pretty well documented that the VW site and brochures give inaccurate info on what this is, and the truth that's starting to come out now is that the cars "without" have a sort of sonic resonator inside the car that enhances the sound when in Sport mode, and that the cars "with" get red calipers and a different exhaust layout that includes an additional sound enhancement.

However, is there anyone on here who has experience of both and can give me any constructive feedback on whether it's an option worth getting? My thoughts on the demo car "without" we're that it came alive in sport mode, sounding very impressive (for a diesel) and therefore what extra would this option add?

Hope someone can help.
Cheers

I thought the red calipers were a Euro-only option unrelated to the Sport & Sound Pack, but I could be wrong.

I agree that the sound in Sport mode sounds great for a diesel. I get my GTD on Tuesday - can't wait!

I'm not sure what the OP is getting at.

I thought all Mk7 GTDs get the sound resonator system as standard in Sport Mode??

6500 Miles in on mine and its sounds OK in Sport mode , not great but not too bad for a 4 pot diesel, but not so bad without it TBH and its quieter certainly.

Sport (Or tailored Individual ) modes are distinct but not night and day different. Throttle response is the car biggest weakness and the Sport Mode doesn't really overcome this.

But its handsome, classy, handles extremely well and holds on tight with not too much understeer

Isn't the sport mode itself an option though?

No, all Golfs have selectable drive mode.

There has been huge confusion over what's included and what's not. Seems like the Sport and Sound pack was added lavish last year and with it you get a slightly different exhaust with a "speaker" of some sort built into it and you also get red calipers like the euro spec cars. If you now spec a car without this option, you'll still get the sound actuator inside the car which you're experiencing in Sport mode.

UK dealers seem to have been pretty much in the dark - read through this thread if you have a spare hour and you'll see what I mean! http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?action=pro...

The car I drove recently was the latter and sounded great, but would be interested to know if anyone who has a recent car with the option added can confirm much difference from a drivers point of view.

There doesn't seem to be any clarity on this from VW though, and it isn't listed in the official spec. Some think it was dropped when VW realised they could make money on it by offering it as an optional extra.

Regarding throttle response, this is what I'll miss most from the MK5 GTI that I am moving from, but I hear the DTUK box dramatically improves it, so I'll be looking at fitting that once it's run in.

Amazes me how we're told dealership guys have the best training direct from the manufacturer and yet time and time again there is total confusion over what actually comes with the car.

Saying that, it may not be the dealerships fault If the manufacturer has made changes to the original specification.

Ahh.. I though that was the adaptive chassis control, a £815 option.

Nov 13 specifation guide details it as 'choice of 3 settings: sport, comfort and normal.

The steering, throttle and a couple of other things are adjustable on all GTDs and other Golfs too (And SEATs and Skodas too by the way )

The adaptive dampers are an expensive option and have as you say 3 distinct settings but the 2 are different

Totally confused!confused

So what are differences between the standard car with selectable modes and the option car with 'adaptive'?

Thanks

All GTDs have a Mode function. This allows you to select Sport,Normal, Eco and Individual modes. This changes Throttle response, steering, a/c and adaptive lights.
It also adds a growlier soundtrack in Sport Mode.

As an option you can specify adaptive dampers that have 3 settings, Comfort, Normal, Sport instead of the passive suspension set up thats standard.

What is being suggested here is that the Sport Mode can be enhanced with a further option pack. I can't comment on that as I was unaware of it when I ordered mine (last September)

Ahh ok. So both have selectable modes, but the 'adaptive' has cleverer active suspension.

Thanks for the info. Never got to test drive one but mine should be arriving in a few weeks now (ordered Jan!)

The wait is excruciating. I ordered first week in January and will eventually get it on Tuesday. Saying that I've heard of plenty of people who have waited 5 months or more!

What spec have you gone for?

It's a lease so specing up costs extraordinarily more.

Just the standard car in standard Red. Comes well kitted anyway so happy with that.

Just booked a test drive on Saturday for a GTD auto thingy. Dealer is saying between 12-16 weeks wait for a new car.

Whatcar mag is giving a target price of about £1200 off the list price - clearly as the car has been out now for 6 odd months I doubt early orders will have got any discount but curious in case you have.

I understand the standard suspension set up is very good for UK roads so was not looking for the adaptive suspension - any views please.

Think the GTD looks great - will be a 2/3rd car for me to save on petrol on the commute and for wife to 1/3 of the time with an E63 amg.

As far as I'm aware it isn't easy to get discount from VW on the GTD, however Drive The Deal can get over £3k discount on a base car. I can't see that being achievable just walking into a dealership.

It looks great in red, I'd honestly have paid more for it.

Mine's Manual , Red , Discover Navigation as its only option but its very very well equipped as standard.

the Front Assist, LED lights , DAB Radio and Active Cruise all great features.

looked at drive the deal website and they say the GTD is from a dealer so hopefully our 'local' will match what driveTD can do. It also allowed to include options as per the WV configurer.
