Why would you buy this over a Golf R?

More economy

Cheaper tax

More go kart like so more fun?

Cheaper to buy - how much does the R cost?

ETA - yep £5k cheaper than a golf

Autocar tear the S1 apart - with leather, nav, Bose and 18s it's a 31k car. Same tax and worse economy than the Golf R too I think. Autocar basically conclude 'Buy a cheaper hot hatch or spend the same on a Golf R'. Early days yet, but not an encouraging review at all.

I'd say it's more comparable to the GTI, ignoring options the price is basically the same but S1 quicker. To be fair both are well enough equipped standard.

Yeah, the S1 is fully loaded and some options, as always with Audi, are crazy prices. Red brake calipers? £340 please. Nevertheless, on the basis of the review I'd have the better resolved, slightly slower, but more practical GTi. Shame as the S1 looks great.

I like it.
I like it more now that every donkey in creation is buying a Golf R
And even more because Autocar don't like it.

All I need is Clarkson to boo it and I'll sign the order form.

I really like the idea of the S1 and reviews have not been bad the main thing is price.
They have been impressed by its performance.
but to put it in perspective it is the only hot hatch which has 4 wheel drive and it will hold its value better.
I give back my GT86 back in 18 months and I will be going for test drive.
I like my car but want it more grunt but fun at the same tome and low costs as well
They are going to bring in 1200 S1s per year so it will be rare.
The other cars I will be looking at are 370z,Mk2 RS and lastly Golf r

Golf R is four wheel drive too for your information. Worth a comparison. I see value in in the S1 for its small, chuckable, fun approach to hot hatchery... Not for £31k mind you.

I think that was done to prevent women, cripples and pensioners buying it.

I had a look inside S1 this week and couldn't see any difference v's an A1 other than the flat bottom steering wheel, thats what the salesman said too.
The boot space is minimal due to the AWD and its a very tiny car v's A3 or TT,IMO, the 18in design wheels also looked awful.
My dealer said Audi UK has said it is not to be demo'd until further notice.

You may have been strung a line there as they told me on Thursday it's available for test drive, orders can be placed with 6 months lead time. I'm going down next week!

I've also heard the S1 has been 'grounded'.No news on what's wrong with it but Audi have told all dealers not to drive them or delivery them to customers.

The 'Car' review is online now - similar to Autocar and awards 3 stars.

Anyone bought one??

I'm interested in GFVs over 2-3 year PCPs to weigh up these vs a Golf R

I take it they've now resolved the production defect which was causing a delay up until now?
