2.0 TFSI burning oil - new engine?
Discussion
You have to consider that when the car turns up at the dealer they can't just jump in and pull the engine. Especially if its under warranty they must follow structured fault finding processes. In the case of this fault that includes compression tests, an oil change and a precise measurement taken, the car is then returned to the owner with instructions to come back in a certain number of miles and/or given time period. When the car returns its measured again and further instruction sought from Audi, who will typically give authority to remove the head for inspection, then removal of the rods/pistons. At each stage everything is photographed for inspection along with complete write up of all the tests/steps taken.
Eventually Audi will give authority for the parts / engine change, but you could be 15 hours down the road by now..
Its infuriating for techs, because they know exactly what the issue is and know what is required to fix it, but they have to follow the processes exactly, otherwise Audi will refuse the warranty claim.
So, its not as simple as someone takes a half hour look and condemns the engine - even if they know thats the issue.
Audi warranties are actually only 2 years, Audi UK add the third year.

We do around 1 a month
Bores get scored, and deem the short motor scrap - an engineering firm could probs rehone the bores, but we don't have that equipment
The limit is 1l per 1000kms, on older cars such as this one we first update the engine breather system, then reassess - sometimes it cures it, but if the bores are already scored, it's pointless
Audi contribute only on full service history, although I've noticed if customers pay for a service up front, ie the next one, we can go on a special goodwill
Not just 2009 models, replacing 11, 12 & 13 plate engines

Thats interesting, I'll follow up with my mate to see if he's seen bore scoring from this too, he showed me pictures of one engine that had witness marks on bore & piston skirt from the piston tipping at TDC.
I believe the bores are coated in Nikasil, which prevents re-boring.
I don't know if they still do it but at one time everything changed under warranty had to be sent back.

So as said re bore or even a hone is a no no pretty much , I suppose the only possible other option is after market cast iron sleeves , but most likely uneconomic . and I doubt some one like Darton wouldn't even make sleeves for this Engine.
Common end to a number of Honda Engines that have FRM bores although Darton Sleeves are available for these as they get tuned in extremis. 500 to 800bhp not uncommon esp in the US

Just got my 2010 A5 back from dealer. 50k on the clock. 325 miles before light came on. Audi offering £3000 towards total cost of £4800. I don't have £1800. 50 k motor needing a new engine on such a prestigious mark not good enough. I have BBC interest in covering this. Please email your story to dpsmith060@aol.co,
If you have a 2tlr petrol oil burner, 2008-2012 , following coverage on Radio 4s you and yours programme on 18thdecember 2014 they have passed on a request for watchdog to cover the story. Watchdog@bbc.co.uk . Now is a good time to contact them directly. Radio 4 programme may be still available on Iplayer
Bought a 2008 2ltr petrol Q5 a year ago (£15k) not all Audi dealer services.
Oil consumption is horrendous, was initially 1ltr every 600miles, now more like 200 miles.
Because not full Audi service I'll have nothing to argue so suspect will have to take a bath on it.
We buy any car around £9k
Damn!

Try your dealer. My '09 A4 had new pistons/rings last year FOC, but that did have FASH. If they don't offer it free, ask for goodwill. They've probably replaced enough totally free that I'd expect they've got it down to a fine art Oil consumption is horrendous, was initially 1ltr every 600miles, now more like 200 miles.

Is it an issue that's considered to be affected by servicing?Oil consumption is horrendous, was initially 1ltr every 600miles, now more like 200 miles.

Although would Audi cover it under any circumstances on an 8yr old car?

A litre every 200 miles!! Does that not kick out loads of blue smoke?
I check the oil in my Golf Edition 30 (2007) every 1000 miles and it drops, like 1 or 2mm below max. Crazy disparity in consumption with these engines!
The issue is with the EA888 engined cars, not the EA113 engine in the Mk5 Golf GTI and Edition 30/Pirelli.I check the oil in my Golf Edition 30 (2007) every 1000 miles and it drops, like 1 or 2mm below max. Crazy disparity in consumption with these engines!

Does this issue affect every 2.0 TFSi engine?? I have just put down a deposit on a 2010 A3 2.0 TFSi with 49k on the clock to replace my MCS as my daily driver.
After reading this thread it would seem that rather then looking forward to trouble free motoring, all I can expect is a rather unreliable and and costly ownership experience.

I've read that it's Q5 and A4 same engines pre 2011After reading this thread it would seem that rather then looking forward to trouble free motoring, all I can expect is a rather unreliable and and costly ownership experience.

Yes circa 2009 onwards A3 2.0 TFSI is EA888.After reading this thread it would seem that rather then looking forward to trouble free motoring, all I can expect is a rather unreliable and and costly ownership experience.

Are there any preventative measures i can take? or is it a case of just waiting for failure and a large bill?
From what I read when I was having trouble with my A4 it's all about how the car was run from new, if the bores/rings have glazed then it'll use oil. It's not something that happens later.
(I could be talking bks from the internet!)
Hope you're lucky with yours.
