Are there any preventative measures i can take? or is it a case of just waiting for failure and a large bill?
Yes. Don't turn the engine 90 degrees in the engine bay. AFAIK, oil consumption is only a major issue with longitudinally mounted EA888's (A5/A5/Q5)Transverse engines (A3, Golf, etc) don't have the same problem. (That's not to say A3 rings never fail, just that it's much rarer)
Tensioner issues do still apply to A3, but I think that's much less common that high oil consumption on A4's.
We have a 2010 Skoda Octavia which in fact has an engine from this batch of Audi chain drive EA888s. Again epic oil consumption from under 50k miles. It failed a Skoda oil consumption test earlier in the year and the car was prescribed £3,500 worth of piston/valve work. We thought that was unreasonable and so stopped using the car out of fear of failure. That was April and Skoda UK have since steadfastly refused to make any link with Audi. They are now not replying to any correspondance.
