B8 S4 Engine Noise?

Hi, Are these normal noises for the V6T? (cold start)

Sounds quite tappety but haven't started ours from cold with the bonnet open - there's a lot of sound deadening under there so may mask it!

thx for sharing the vid, yup not the tapping noise the other one, it seems to be coming from the supercharger (I can feel it through the cover). I've just covered 2k so first service is in 7k miles or 142 days time according to the MMI. I might just let an Audi tech have a listen.

Edited to add, there is a belt / pulley judder type noise in the back ground, is this what you mean ?

update, took it into Audi who have heard something from the back of the engine they didn't like on cold start this morning. They've now sent a sound file off to Audi Germany and are keeping the car for another 4 days () just to make sure.

I had this on an S4 it just needed an oil change. It was oil starvation on a chain tensioner because the oil was to thin and ran down while the engine was not running. I used Millers NANODRIVE 5w-40 NT Full Synthetic Engine Oil and it went away. Having said that not sure I would buy a car with the noise as it could be something else.

These 3.0TFSI engines should run smooth, with no ticking noises. They shouldn't have any major oil burn issues, it wasn't common in these engines. Quite uncommon for the videos mentioned above.

I can try and post one tomorrow. It's the 3.0TFSI engine from an A6 but is nonetheless exactly the same.

That’ll be great, what year is it because there was a first and second generation (with small tweaks) but like you said, should generally be the same. Thanks again

It’s blissfully sunny here. After a little digging I found this chap with an A7 3.0TFSI who has put together a silent overview and does a recording of under the bonnet.... seems to be the same

Finally got a video, rain held for a minute. No loud rattling when cold on ours, fortunately. Running on super unleaded.

These engines in general have a tappety sound, likely the camshaft. But, the engines above have loud ticking noises, and rattles when starting.

While I'm here, this video is not a cold start, but not a hot start. When hot, the starter comes on for a very short time, the engine fires up quickly. But, in my video, the engine does seem to use the starter for some time. Does the same when cold in the morning. Engine drives completely fine otherwise. I doubt it's any cause for concern, maybe the car is using it longer to ensure it fires well/doesn't knock?

Edit: interesting to note the differences, the expansion tank for coolant seems to be much larger on the A6 than the S4. Also note how much plastic is used to cover up the engine bay, looks like a V10 could fit in there

Thanks for the upload Ryan, by the looks of it, the tapping noise is just a regular sound generated. I’m picking my 14 plate S4 up this week so I (when I say I, I mean a friend) will have a look before handing over the money.

That's the oil I started using in mine and it went away, however the startup rattle returned within 3k miles from memory.

I can concur that my S4 has 'tappety' sounds like the A6 and A7 videos above.

I thought this was because of the direct injection?
