Good evening all, I am contemplating replacing my ageing Civic VTi Aerodeck, whilst hunting I came across the 6R Polo GTi and it looks to be a very appealing package, especially in 5 door form. Do any PHers have experience of it? Is there anything I need to be on the look out for?

Many thanks in advance.

The engine and the gearbox, other than that all is good so to speak.

Check that the VW recall work has been done on the box and that engine isn't drinking oil. Failures of the 1.4TSI twin charge resulting in the new engine being required are well documented.

I've run one since new in July 2011 and love it. I think (based on what I've read on other forums) that the high oil consumption mainly affected the first batch of cars, some of which had piston ring upgrades. This has not been my experience and oil consumption has been well within the tolerances set out in the manual. I personally would look for 2011 onwards and I think with a newer car you would be fine.

I've covered about 34,500 in mine and I still love it every time I get in. It can be lovely and sedate when I'm doing the boring commute to work, yet quite manic and fun when I want to go faster. For the type of driving I do (lots of motorway miles and no track days) it is a great little car. The DSG box isn't for everyone, but I gelled with it straightaway (my first experience) and would buy another. I think you can spec a manual with the facelifted/revised version out this year.

I have a soft spot for the Ibiza Cupra too, but the Polo cabin, in my opinion, is a nicer place to be (+ the Cupra is 3 dr only, which may rule it out for you).

HTH.

Lovely cars but a bit too clever for its own good meaning it's prone to expensive problems. They've had serious issues with some major engine components (full replacement isn't uncommon) and the 7-speed DSG has a mixed reliability record.

I'd still reccomend them but it really needs a good warranty attached to it and decent maintainance/ service history record.

I've got a MK5 Golf GTI DSG and have toyed around with the idea of swapping it for one of these

You could go slower with the 140/150PS GT model (with manual), or stick to a later 2011/2012/2013 GTI

I have the Ibiza FR with the same engine/gearbox combo but with less power and you can't fault it.

I'm just after an upgrade for a little more leg room now, but the engine and gearbox is perfect!

Edit:

Also there has just been a recall for 7 speed DSG, something to do with the oil in it can fuse the gearbox or something and they need to change it.

2010 car.

Replacement engine due to excessive oil consumption, failed clutch-pack, failed EGRV.

Has dented my confidence in VAG products somewhat.
