Oil level shows max electronic dipstix after 0.5l top up

Had my 2013 A8 TDI for about 4000 miles, from 3500 miles old. The oil level started at 2/3 on the electronic display and dropped to 1/4 gradually over those 4000 miles so I added about 0.5 litres (507.00 rated Castrol Edge of correct viscosity) yesterday. Since no dipstix, after a drive this morning I checked the electronic level on level ground and it shows on the max. I worried I had too much, but I see the car asks you to reduce oil level from googling.

I could have waited for it to ask for more. Any pointers?

The gap at the top of the box is 2 pixels compared with 1 pixel at the bottom and it does emphatically say "oil level OK". Electronic nonsense.
