I think they look absolutely bloody fantastic and VW should be congratulated for building it.
Were I in a position to burn 100k to my mind the XL1 is far, far cooler than an R8. Yes it's a geek's car but I'm a geek.

Anyway no need to burn your £100k, they'll be selling for much less than that soon unless they're only building half a dozen or so.

Funny how folk have such different ideas on what looks good and what doesn't. I am firmly in the fantastic camp. To me it's like a really classy reboot of the original Honda Insight.
Agreed!! By all accounts (the many web reviews of the car, and from chatting to VW themselves) it seems people universally love the car when they see it for real on the road and are totally fascinated by it. I think its because on first take it's a cross between a spaceship and a shark…. and then when they see the big VW badge on the front they think "What?! it's a "car of the people!?" and therefore "I HAVE to know more about this…" From forbes.com:
"The most dangerous thing about Volkswagen’s XL1 is how it affects people outside the car. They take cellphone photos and gesture frantically at highway speeds, looking across the steering wheel at a 90-degree angle from the road in front of them. They jump out in traffic directly in front of the vehicle, motioning for you to slow down so they can examine it closely. They yell out of open windows across traffic lights and multi-lane streets, asking how much it costs, how fast it’ll go and where they can buy one."
