I'm potentially looking to buy a Mk7 Golf GTI or GTD as a daily commuter. It'll be roughly 350 miles per week on a mix of open A Roads, dual carriageway and a short bit of town driving.

I did test drove both. GTD managed a 48mpg over 30 miles (official figure is 62mpg!). GTI test drive was too short to really get an accurate idea.

Does anyone have any real world experience of MPG from both the GTD and GTI?

I've no experience of the GTI but the GTD 'real world' figure of 44-48 would be about right according to my sibling who has one & keeps tabs on the fuel usage for expenses.

I'd do a proper costing if I were you - of which fuel is only one part. Depreciation, car tax, insurance, repairs etc...

I'd be surprised if the GTI wasn't more expensive to run, but perhaps by only 5-10% over 3-4 years - taking all of the above costs into account. The way I'd look at it is whether to get a GTD with, say, satnav and Dynaudio - or a GTI without.

The GTI will, of course, be the nicer drive too. smile

With a few miles on it the diesel gets better. I've the same engine in a superb which is easily averaging high 50's per tank, getting into the 60's on the motorway.

Surely the answer here is to decide which one you really want and then do the man maths to convince yourself it's the right choice. From what I observe petrol cars are not far behind diesel equivalents these days in terms of mpg and as the poster has rightly pointed out is only one cost factor. I'd go with GTI, always.

I've had both and averaged around 30-32mpg in the GTI, compared to 45mpg in my current GTD, and that has only 2000 miles on it. That's probably 70% urban and 30% fast A-roads and motorways.

For what it's worth, I preferred the GTI, but the economy disappointed me, and as such the GTD feels like less of a compromise. It handles superbly, the cabin is very nice, standard equipment is good, and it's fast enough for a commuting car. I drove mine to Northumberland last weekend and set the ACC to 70mph and drove for 3 hours without touching the brake pedal or accelerator. It averaged 58mpg, four up with a boot crammed with luggage.

I get about 30 urban in the GTI and ended up with an average of 44mpg on a Mallaig to Edinburgh run, lots of overtakes, averaged out with a fair distance on cruise. About 15mpg better on the diesel sounds about right.

My GTD is 2 months old and has done 2100 miles - I am seeing 51mpg and that is a mix of approx 60% urban and 40% motorway.

Simply awesome car in every way IMHO

I do mostly short journeys in my GTI and it's getting low to mid 30s, about what I expected. Get about 350-400 miles out of a tank.

I only do about 8,000 miles a year though so it's not a massive issue.

I'm the same low 30s usually 40 on a run.

How you drive it doesn't seem to affect the mpg much

Seems suspiciously like an ad to me.

ETA: Post above was deleted, so mine isn't relevant any more.

There was a 6-page article in the March 2014 issue of Volkswagen Driver magazine which specifically compared all the pros and cons of the Mk 7 GTI and Mk 7 GTD, including a table of data which also compared the performance and fuel economy of Mk 4 , 5 and 6 GTI and GTD for context. Mk 7 GTI (230 PS PP) averaged 34.8 mpg and recorded best of 45.8 while the GTD (DSG) averaged 48.4 and recorded a best (economy driving) of 65.3 mpg.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm lucky enough to have a V6 Exige for fun so the Golf will be for the daily commute. My head says GTD but my petrol head heart is saying GTi,

I've had a GTD for the last 5800 miles and the true average is currently sitting at 45.3mpg. On board computer says something like 46ish. On a longer 100 mile+ trip it will gradually creep up to 58ish if you stick to 70-75 on cruise control. Most of my driving is more local 20-40 mile runs so it doesn't get much chance to get properly warmed through. Ragging it around local lanes doesn't make a huge difference to fuel consumption as you're on and off the throttle more, it'll still do 35+ easily which I doubt the GTI would.

It's a fantastic all rounder but I haven't driven a GTI so I don't know what I might be missing out on.

I have seen upto 50mpg on my GTI - steady motorway cruise, but most of the time it is around 39mpg!
