A4 Avant 2.0TFSI Quattro manual here: 32.5MPG over the last 8K miles. However a week's jaunt to Stirling with family (fair bit of motorway, and obeyance of most speed limits) gave around 38MPG.

I ended up with the 2.0TFSI as I just couldn't find a 3.0TDi with a sensible price/spec/mileage. No regrets (although I'm keeping a close eye on the oil consumption...)

No motorway or dual-carrigeway on the commute for me so no real constant speed which may make a bit of difference. Thinking of that though auto does make more sense.

Same here : Nearest DC/Mway is nearly 30 (hilly) miles away. What MPG do you get from the Impreza at present?

I think this means your average mpg in a 3.0tdi quattro will be under 34mpg, probably as low as 32.

Impreza doesnt do the commute. Before I only had 10 minute walk to work, but its depressing being that close. Never actually worked out MPG of Impreza but its running 360bhp and 400lb/ft torque (not that much compared to some, I know). I wont even be getting 20 I wouldn't have thought.

We are using the other halfs Fiat 500 twinair at the moment but its not the most pleasant place to sit on the commute and underpowered for when you do get stuck in a bit of traffic you want to clear, and considering what it is supposed to do MPG wise the current 40-45 is a bit of a joke. I can live with 40-45mpg in a car that isn't a Fiat 500. Although I do like the car it's not really suited to what it is now being used for.

So we would be getting rid of both if we go down A5 route. However now discussing keeping the Impreza and just replacing her car with diesel Golf/A3/ something similar. Just as long as its a bit bigger than 500.

I was the same, 3.0 diesels were too expensive! Mines been ok on oil consumption though (12 reg).

That's pretty much exactly what mine did. Quite expensive to run and I wasn't impressed with it. Could only get 40+mpg @60mph on quiet motorways.

Or you could buy an Audi S5 which would only cost 2k more per year in fuel @ 22,000mls p/y. The warranty cost is the same, the tyre cost will be the same.

Another option - I'm getting a little over this in my Mk5 Golf GTI DSG. DSG seems to be the uktimate compromise between auto/manual and I don't have to run it on lorry fuel.

Real world- I get between 400 and 450 miles between fill ups. I have never managed 500 miles on a tank, but then again 80-90 leptons is my normal cruising speed on motorways. 2007 A5 3.0tdi Quattro.
The on board fuel computer is very optimistic and reckons an average close to 40mpg.

40-45 is what I am looking for. If it can comfortably do that then I'm likely to go down that route.

Anyone had both 177 2.0 engine and the 3.0? I assume the performance difference is quite noticeable.
I've not owned a 177 2.0 but have been in an A4 Quattro with that engine and its noticeably slower than the 3.0 in mine, although mine is 7 speed s-tronic and that was a manual so different characteristics. The 3.0 s-tronic is well matched combination.

I do 2k miles per month commuting for work across a mix of town and motorway, driving normally (occasional boot full, cruise around 80) I get 36 mpg overall average to date (last 20k miles) and 40 on a long run. I rarely see above 40 or below 30.

You can nanny it to 45 mpg but if you're gonna do that, just buy the 2.0!!

I have the car you're after (not for sale - yet)

An A5 3.0 245 DSG Black Edition on a 2011 plate, pre facelift (lights are marginally different, slightly older MMI system). Black edition is 19' wheels + upgraded gizmos internally (B&O sound system, full phone preparation, tech pack high etc).

Motorway miles: 40 mpg if you're a judge.

Commuting with spirited accelerations 30mg.

Maximum achieved miles to a tank: 370
Minimum achieved miles to a tank: 240

Black edition with the low profile tyres (35's) is a bit jiggly at low speeds but unless you have a glass back this is not a problem.
Sticks to the road like glue, until it lets go, then it's a bit "snappy".
ASR has two stages of off. Neither of these are completely off but are not particularly invasive until you're over the limit. I found myself sideways on a track at 85mph, planted it and got nothing.

Totally stock, no remaps.

Back seats are limited for people that are 5'9 or less. Any taller and your head is on the roof cloth.
Baby seats (maxicosi on ISOFIX) are a bit of a ballache to get in and out until you figure your muscle memory and foot wedge procedure (front seats have a habit of returning to their back position when you're in the middle of trying to fit).
