Its a cut down 1.9 PD lump, effectively VW's most reliable recent engine. It's identical bar one cylinder. Only issues are thermostats & water pumps, but if done with a cambelt not an issue.
Just watch for gearboxes on them, they have a habit of lunching diffs & syncros which is not that common only higher mileages

I've got one - A 90bhp model with a variable vein turbo, had it for 3 years and covered around 40k in it - Not a single problem other than occasionally needing to clean out the EGR valve (is a routine service point anyway), a new glowplug (didn't effect the running of the car at all) and a slightly iffy oil level sensor sometimes saying the car needs oil when it doesn't - Good engine, 90bhp version has plenty of punch. Not the quietest or smoothest but makes a nice 3pot warble, revs freely too. I get 63mpg average on a run and around 55mpg in all other driving - admittedly this is in an Audi A2 so the car itself is very light
I run a Fabia 1.4TDi with now 82k on clock ,of which approx 70 k is mine. Only drawback is the cambelt /tensioner/waterpump service which can really cost. oil changes can be a bit pricier due to the oil needed. Other than that, MK1 Fabias have a history of failing door cards (= wet floors). That aside, I find it in town a great little car and also very good on Motorways and the handling on winding country lanes is excellent.
I had an Ibiza 1.4TDI (80bhp) as my second car, Modified it.
Ran:
1. PD160 air intake
2. Custom Code remap
3. De-cat downpipe
And some other handling mods, it made 112bhp on a set of rollers on a really hot day and then 110bhp on another set of rollers. it went well for such a small engine and was cracking on fuel.
Never had any issues with the engine.
Replaced it with a Leon FR TDI PD170.
