So, after going in my partners A3 2.0 tdi with a symphony and bose speakers the sound is 100% crisper, the bass 100% deeper and more effective. I played the same song in both cars and the Sympony sounded pretty much spot on and in the TT i was underwhelmed..

Is this down to the concert head unit in my TT not driving the speakers as well as the Symphony or are the bose drivers in the TTS shonky and probably worth upgrading?

Some people are suggesting its limited by something in vagcom depending on whether the cars a roadster/coupe or if its got leather/alcantara.. Is there any credence to this?

Advice welcomed !

If the concert head unit is the ugly one with the orange dot-matrix-esque display, then yes. It's crud. I had it in a TT and it was awful compared to the system in my S3.

Possibility that the head unit has been swapped out at some point and the one refitted isn't coded for BOSE so won't know to use the amp etc.

Sounds likely - probably only driving the front speakers, so no rears or sub.

Failing that, how about an aftermarket Bluetooth kit?
