Trouble reading fault codes Audi A4 Avant Tdi

Morning guys.

My dads car has been playing up the last week so i said i would plug in my diagnostics to see if there are any codes to report.

I keep getting an error 01317 Can't access fault codes in instrument cluster module (J285)

Done some research and people suggest disconnecting the battery for a bit which i did but still i cannot read the codes.

I've tried scanning the individual control modules but the only ones i can access are Auto HVAC and Instruments.

Any idea why i am not able to access the codes, im guessing what i need is in the engine module but it just won't connect.

Any pointers/ideas would be great, reluctant to take it to a garage until i've explored every avenue.

Thanks for the offer, my dad got a bit impatient and took it to a local garage to read the codes.

The reason for reading the codes is sometimes the coil light would not illuminate and the car would not start, also the gearbox PNRDS flashes when this happens.

Here is what was extracted from the ECU, any ideas what would be the issue here?

Be interested to hear what tame technician reckons - it may be related to the ABS controller (seem to recall similar issues with our Passat which was traced to a common fault in the electronics tacked to the side of the module under the bonnet which resulted in failed comms to the instrument cluster) - depending on what modules are failing to communicate when, if you're looking for DIY answers I'd start by checking the ECU boxes for any water ingress or poor connections.

I'd expect a decent indy to be able to resolve it without it costing you too much. if any electronics require attention look up BBA Reman as they can repair modules much cheaper than replacing
