polo oil use

A work colleague having a mare with his polo, replaced engine and now this ones using a lot of oil.

In 300 miles its used 3/4 litre of oil.

Its the 1200cc 3 cyclinder single cam engine.

Any ideas?

Could it be breather valve not working ?
