Hello Audi people,

A friend is looking to buy a A4 convertible 3.0 manual petrol with about 110,000 on the clock. Can anyone provide any buying tips or pointers towards a buying guide? Would I be right in guessing the car would be a B6? Wikipedia is useless in this instance.

Any help greatly appreciated, never dabbled in ze German cars.

Thanks

Yes, B6 from 2002 to late 2005 when it was facelifted. The 3.0 is a nice engine and suits the car but is quite juicy and they are a bit prone to head gaskets failing, a friend has one and hers failed, the 1.8t is most popular for a reason.... Is it fwd, quattro, multitronic (god forbid)? At that sort of mileage it might be ok but it might be a basket case, A4 cabs are built like tanks body wise, if well looked after they should do 150k before problem if serviced well so buy on condition and history. Make sure the roof works properly including while moving, should work up to 30kmh on B6's and 50kmh on the newer B7's.

Also be aware the 3.0 petrol needs cambelt and waterpump every 5 years or 75k (whichever comes first) so if no proof as it should have had two done by now. Its a £500ish job and dont whatever you do skimp and not get the waterpump, they can seize, strip the cambelt and trash the engine.

Or check out a 3.0tdi example. Power, economy and reliability. Bulletproof.

Good to hear! I don't get some of the negative comments on here. Unless I've been lucky...

I've got a 3.0 Tiptronic Quattro with all bells and whistles and it has been very reliable (famous last words). And regarding fuel economy, heck my 2014 Golf R uses more petrol than this 3.0 V6...I average at around 34mpg...Mine is packed up now whilst i'm enjoying the Golf R...But I'll get it back on the road again there after. Fantastic car.
