What do people generally get from these engines?

I was expecting around 40-45mpg, but brim to brim has come out at 35mpg, which not only being less than I expected, but also means a tank only lasts 450 miles! By comparison, my old 1.9tdi A4 would do 700 miles on a tank. It does a 30 miles to work and back every day, so not a lot of cold driving. Mix of roads, about 14 miles duel carriageway and 14 miles back roads, 5 mins maybe in slow moving traffic, should be a equation for high efficiency.

The car isnt new, so I dont expect it to loosen up as it beds in.Done 75,000

Quattro or not? Manual or auto? That makes a fair difference. Still sounds a bit low. My old Quattro manual used to manage 40 average.

Cooling system working ok? It should sit solidly at 90 once warmed up.

I'd expect to average low40s in that case.

Get it scanned for any stored fault codes with VCDS or similar. Not all faults put the engine management on so you might have an underlying issue perhaps?

if its a 2010 its a CR engine. A common issue on these is one of the DPF sensors burn out. If this is failing then it may be telling the ECU to force regen all the time (as its maybe reading wrong/not working at all) which would make fuel consumption poor.

As above get it scanned on VCDS

What mode are you using?

The difference between Efficiancy and Dynamic is at least 5mpg in my A6 2.0 170

Didnt know I could change mode! How do I know what mode Im in, and change it?

Rang local Audi dealer to have a chat and book it in for getting scanned, the service bloke said that mid 30's was pretty common for these engines and if anything was wrong the EML would be on. If that's true, its shocking! 35mpg is 20mpg less than claimed. I know they wont be the same, but 20mpg is 40% out from official figures.

We have a Tiguan 170ps 4 motion , lifetime fuel is around 42 mpg
a motorway run on cruise control set just sub 70 will show up to 50mpg
so I would have thought this should be a benchmark to look for

We have same engine in our Superb on a pretty similar commute and we also have 80k on our car

Day to day average is 42-44mpg , will record a little higher on the MFD and on a steady motorway run high 50's are achievable

I could get mid 40s out of the 1.8T 160bhp FWD 2009. Not that it helps you. But I guess it does mean that there might be something at fault with yours

My 2012 Skoda vRS has the same engine (and DSG), has covered just over 25K miles and has averaged 43mpg over the last 16K miles (that I have owned the car). That is calculated - the MFD shows over 45.

My 10 plate (25k mile) Octy VRS (170) manual is showing 47 mpg over the last 6 months. That's based on a relatively short 10 miles each way commute. I had it showing 64.7 on the computer the other day for a 20 mile cross country mixed journey - admittedly diving like Miss Daisy. Have to say how impressed I am with this car and its CR engine. Much more refined than my 2.0 pd 140hp Mk 5 Golf I ran for 2 years and equally as economical. It goes like st off a shovel and costs less to run fuel wise than the 1.2 petrol Fabia loan car they lent me for a week a while back....

I my 63 plate A4 technic , is currently showing a life time average of 46.3 at 24k . That is around 30% down on Audi published claims , spoke a couple people who have had the equivalent 320ED for a similar time who are achieving high 50,s and in one case 62 mpg over life ,of course these are all numbers from the on car system I have never tried a brim. To brim check. 2 Stealers also confirmed this is about what one should expect in the real world and Audi UK didn't deny that this would be the norm.

Why have you got different tyre sizes on an A4? They should all be the same...

Okay, so not sure why but mpg does seem to be slightly better. The last brim to brim was in the region of 41mpg, although that did include a couple of hours sat at 75 on the cruise control. Still dont think its brilliant, but better than before.
