I have had a mk1, mk2 and mk4 gti. I preferably want to stay in the VAG stable as I know my way around the cars and rate myself with VCDS and get good discounts at the local TPS.

Starting a new job in the new year that will be average 30k a year motorway miles. With personal use on top. Home based in derby with full UK travel.
It's a small company and the boss is paying 12k for relevant training courses.
As I won't be earning for six months, but will need car, we have agreed on a 8k limit for a suitable vehicle.
I have been reading up and I feel I have an understanding-

1.9 pd is old tech
2.0 pd has reliability issues
2.0 cr is best

The only cars under budget with the cr I can find are Seat 2.0 Exeos and 1.6 Octavia's. Are these a good bet?

I was looking at the Octavia VRS but these are the 2.0 pd.

I would prefer a golf sized car but feel it may be too small for the 30k a year? The two chaps running the business currently run a s80 and delivery mileage 320d estate and would not advise anything smaller (I am 6ft 2).

Any advice would be great chaps as I am blind when it comes to diesels. The gent with the 320 had to move his accord 2.2 due to consistent turbo and DPF problems.

I seem to have missed the passat!
CR comes in either 1.6 blue motion 110 or 2.0 140.
Blue motion promises excellent MPG.

Also are there any later 2.0 PD engine codes that have revisions for the oil pump shaft, injectors and porous heads?

1.6CR is a gutless POS..... avoid.

The 2.0CR are pretty good... much less "diesel" than the PDs

You should just about get a 2.0 cr Leon with reasonable miles for about 8-8.5k. It would be an se or a sport rather than an fr but the same engine 140bhp. The cr engines are from about 59 plate onward

Can anything beat this?

Apologies if external links are against rules.

Would absolutely prefer leather for long distance work. My current mk4 gti with leather header Recaros is supremely comfortable. Went from Windernere to Bath in a straight run no problem.

I would prefer a estate for dog duties but this looks out of budget. Unfortunately with having a boot it means dog on back seat!

I like my CR 140, very smooth and pleasant to drive particularly with the DSG 'box. It isn't as quiet as a petrol motor but significantly more refined than the PD unit.

The Passat Highline in the link looks nice. One of my friends drove one of those up until recently, seemed a very comfortable car capable of just eating up the miles.

Looks good.
Are we in agreement that whatever four wheeled box it comes in, the 2.0 cr 140 is the one to go for?

The 2.0 CR is indeed best pick, very refined, quiet for a diesel and doesn't get all wheezy at higher revs like older tech diesels.

I've only first hand experience of the 170, but imagine the 140 to be adequate.

I have a 2009 Audi A3 2.0TDi CR 170bhp

Not sure what these are fetching? WBAC offered me £6200! I'm not selling, I was just curious last week.

I'm quite fond of my car, owned for 3 years now.

I've got a 140 CR equipped Seat Exeo, it's a huge amount of car for the money, even if it's a bit of a dogs dinner to look at.

Should comfortably be into facelift Octavia territory on that budget

I'd maybe leave the VRS and just get a well equipped CR 140. Remap later on if more power required driving

Very supprised that 170cr A3's could be in budget. A link to one would be good.

Again it comes down to how many miles your happy with it having. A3 170 CRs can be had for as little as £6k but will be well over 100k. £8k for one under (just) http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...

I've owned a 2008 Octavia Vrs PD since 2009..
60000 miles. EGR at 35000 miles (£300). Radio aerial went faulty . 45 mpg average. 2 sets of tyres. Original brakes etc. That's it. Most reliable car ive owned by far..
Only paid 13k for it as Skodas were cheap then. Easily worth 6k now. So cheap motoring too...
