I’m looking at getting one of these for the wife, to replace her complete PoS that I’ve finally persuaded her needs to be taken out to the pasture, shot repeatedly then weighed in for scrap.

Likely to be new, either a 2014 or 2015 model.

Problem here is that it’ll be a US spec model which appears to have a couple of differences – not least that the only engine worth having will be the 1.8 TSI, which appears to be an EA888 variant. I’ve only heard good things about this engine – but has any one any experience with it in this size, at all? I don’t see it used by VW at all in the uk, but I’m guessing it’ll be used somewhere in the group range?

Secondly, it appears that it may be a slightly down-specced version for the US market, for cost cutting reasons – it loses the soft touch dash and rear multi-link suspension (though the former may be present in one trim level, and the later may be back from 2014 on-wards). Difficult to see for sure, though - so – how is the Jetta interior – will this be noticeable? (notice a lack of concern about the suspension; this is the land of straight roads; not a big deal).

Finally – are there any really must have options or trims? In the US, there’s only a couple of packages – lighting (adds LED drl’s and ‘adaptive front lighting’) and ‘driver assistance’ (blind spot monitoring and the like). Everything else is done via the trim levels.

The 1.8T is only used on the facelift polo gti that's due shortly by vw in the uk. However Audi, seat and possibly Skoda all use this engine in various guises. Seems to be a fairly good allrounder according to reviews and generally doesn't have any major issues.

As above it's used in the new SEAT Leon and Audi A3 which are similar applications. Not the most popular choice as many over here opt for the diesel or smaller petrol. However there don't seem to be any complaints.

The Jetta is let down by its cheap feeling interior and slightly dated underpinnings. Would a Mk7 Golf not be an option?

Interesting, thank you both of you.

As for a Golf -
1). It's more expensive here, both at list price and in the lack of discounting. Might well be nicer, but the Jetta is priced to sell like hot cakes.
2). This is the land of the free and the home of the brave - they don't hold with those new fangled things such as hatchbacks, hence why the Jetta outsells the Golf here.
