Recently got a Mk7 Golf (1.4TSI ACT DSG) as a company car and so far so good - nice to be be back in a petrol.

Like many these days I primarily use Spotify for my music, great thing is the head unit controls the basic funtions when using blue tooth, however when plugged into the media-in multimedia interface it assumes you want to use itunes on the iphone (I don't use it) and doesn't seemingly allow spotify. This means I can't use spotify and charge the phone at the same time.

Appreciate this is VERY much a first world problem, but having done 2k miles in three weeks in the car I do a fair mileage and so listening to music is important. Any suggestions at all, doubt I'm the only one who's found this? Even when changing source it doesn't seem to help, though sure I'm doing something very basic wrong......

Cheers

In my Mk6 I'm able to stream Spotify over Bluetooth, have you tried this? I just start playing on the phone then select Bluetooth Audio in the car's media menu.

Yep, when using Spotify I'm using bluetooth, if you then plug in the phone to charge it, it assumes you want to use itunes, stops Spotify and you can't seemingly use it. PITA as given the time I spend in the car charging the awful battery on an iphone is necessary. Agreed with the other poster that a car charger will be required under those circumstances.

Re your MK6, once you start playing on the phone to what extent can you control Spotify? As far as I can tell on the MK7 you can only skip back & forward on the steering wheel, play & pause on the screen for the current album, you can't change albums/playlists etc?

Not tried it with Spotify but when you plug in the phone, you can press the Media button and then bottom left is a Source option where you can choose from the direct connection, bluetooth, SD card etc. You may be able to have it charging and communicating over Bluetooth at the same time?

I've managed to get Spotify working with the iPhone connected via MDI. When you first connect it starts playing music from the phone automatically but it seems you can override this by opening the Spotify App and clicking play manually. You can then control through the car and see the track info on screen

Whilst that's going on the iPhone is still able to charge, and the Bluetooth connection remains active for calls/ phonebook. Again I'm not sure how different the setup is in the Mk7 but the actual cable should be the same, I'm using the latest version - 5N0 035 554 H.

Many thanks for the response & uploading the pictures, much appreciatedsmile

Would seem the Mk7 is different, I tried this and it simply won't play via spotify & connected to the car via the cable, it says there's nothing to play, and will only play spotify once on 'BT Audio' option ie via bluetooth. Shame as mentioned iphone batteries are so rubbish & i spend so much time in the car it's a necessity frankly. Very odd. One of the few poor things, other than throttle response, grrr................
