Hello everybody.. I'm posting this on behalf of a mate who's just bought his girlfriend a MK1 TT. The car only came with one key and so he's looking to get another as a spare.. he's called round a few places and he's getting prices of £150-£200 for a new coded key.

Is there anyone in the PH community who can help out with a better price to get this done or any places you can recommend?

He's also after a set of 4 alloys with good tyres if anyone has some kicking about!

Suggest places like TIMPSONS or locksmiths. I was quoted approx £100 for a copy coded Skoda key ( it's only the larger places that do them) or £15 for a non coded one. I've seen a few ads locally for locksmiths doing coded keys ,so might be worth asking local AA/RAC man for information. From what I was told, the locksmiths saw how much the dealers were making and found they could undercut the dealers and still make a decent profit.

Just pay the circa £200 dealer price, which is supplied and coded to the car. It's a lot easier in the long run and if there's any problems with it, you have some fall back, instead of some forum / ebay bloke.

Further explanation....

The "Key" is sold in 2 parts. The switchblade key / immob section is chassis unique and Audi cut these at HQ and send it to the dealer. This part needs coding to the car by the dealer, or by using some software called VAG-Tacho, which is about 300 Euro. You can already see where I'm going with this....

The second part of the key is the alarm fob, which is generic to a frequency range for that model of TT. You can buy just that bit and have it coded by dick next door with his VAG-COM laptop.

If you want both, refer to paragraph one. Yes, it's expensive, but what's cheaper, £200 ish for a spare key, or losing your only key and having to call someone out and potentially get all the locks changed?

£200 is cheap anyway. A spare key for my Alfa 147 cost £450.
