Am I mad? old S4 for newer golf
Discussion
Hi all - my wife is offloading her 2007 Golf GT (170hp) on to me whilst she steals my range rover.
I'm thinking of swapping the golf for something a bit more interesting and the B6 S4 has caught my eye.
Am I being stupid swapping a good condition, nippy 2007 motor for an 11 year old estate (with a V8)? They're both worth about the same.
I'll be using it to commute to the station each day (7 miles all in) and then the odd trip to the countryside and general kid duties at the weekend. Is there any reason to avoid a V8 for short commuting journeys? (Obvs mpg etc isn't a concern)
Thanks for any view

You'll probably find the S4 will suffer from more 'old car niggles' and cost more in fuel/ general running costs. Yes it will be more fun but you need to balance that against the hassle and costs. MPG maybe doesn't matter for a short station commute but does for the longer journeys that inevitably need to happen and casual evening/ weekend usage.
I did a similar swap earlier in the year going from a new-ish Leon 1.4 TSI to an old Mk5 Golf GTI. It was awesome fun over summer taking it to all the club events etc, but after 6-months and an MOT failure the niggles and running costs just got too tedious so I swapped it for a much newer Mk6 Golf.

Hi Bug, looking around £7-8k so the yellow is in range! Think it's a touch too lary for me though! I guess in their price range it's all about service history and work that's been done.
Does the jag s type have the supercharged V8? I previously owned a jag XJR with the supercharged 4.2, awesome piece of kit and highly recommended.

7 miles in an S4 is ridiculous. That's barely enough time to get any air and heat through the engine to disperse the warm-up moisture. Get a moped or pedal bike!
You'll soon change your mind about the V8 once you get it up on the ramps anyway. Everything you look at under there costs a fortune. The exhaust, the trailing arms and ball joints (of which there are plenty), the brakes, everything. For 7 miles, it makes zero sense, but it's your money

i ran a b6 s4 for 6 months
wanted to tick the s4 4.2 v8 and the soft top route
in essence, it was a nice car.
the dreaded cam chain rattle (from the internet, how ironoic), got me thinking about it each time i started it up
although mine was quiet, with a little noise at start up
the car was quick when pushed on, but the rubbish mpg really got to me in the end. 15mpg! for a short commute where I didn't stretch it's legs the cost of fuel was annoying and painstaking.
the exhaust is timid and needs to be upgraded for sure.
i didn't love mine, but on paper it ticks a lot of boxes.
no comparison to your golf, but my r32 dsg mkv was more fun, sounded awesome from standard and a bit more nimble

I've not heard any rattling, yet (cue enormous rattle as i drive home tonight..)
This one has had an aftermarket Milltek exhaust system fitted. I was a bit worried about it, thinking it'd be too loud and in yer face, however I was pleasantly surprised. The sound is great and not too intrusive. It does still look like 4 baked bean tins sticking out the back of the car though

Yeah the S-type does have the supercharged 4.2 - I do like the XJ too mind you.Does the jag s type have the supercharged V8? I previously owned a jag XJR with the supercharged 4.2, awesome piece of kit and highly recommended.

I ran mine for 7 years and 55k miles. Normal wear and tear items (tyres and brakes and one battery), other than that a broken rear spring and that was a bout it.
The fear of the rattle got to me in the end, so I sold it in Jan.
I miss the noise, it was epic. As was the MPG!
You'll not go wrong with a well looked after S4. Tremendous machines, if not for the fuel, you could own it for the rest of your life and not miss out on much else unless you want to go off roading.
I've driven the B5,6 and 7, and although the B7 is brilliant, I would prefer the B6 Avant for everyday. Enjoy it!
