So, following on from my last thread about the keys being locked in the car, can someone perhaps explain what happened to the car please?

My girlfriend unlocked the car and opened the passenger door. She put her handbag on the seat, shut the door and walked around to the driver’s side, only to find it was locked. All the doors were locked.

What happened there? Is this the auto lock feature which locks the car after a few seconds if the doors aren’t opened? But the passenger door was opened, does this system require the driver’s door to be opened in order to prevent the car from locking again? If so, can this be disabled? I don’t need a car to start locking itself, we’re capable of doing that ourselves!

Thanks,

Dan

It may well be that the passenger door switch is wearing and didn't register that the door had been opened. From then on it's a very basic alarm function for it to re-lock the car if the alarm thinks its been unlocked and the car subsequently not used.

Its normally triggered by a rise in engine revs over the static, and hence can trigger if the car blips at any point.

Security wise its a good feature as it stops you forgetting to lock your doors in dangerous car jacking hotspots - like South Africa, or Birmingham.

On my Audi you can disable it by the MMI in the set up/car option page. Hopefully the same for your girlfriends.

On my track toy, I have Black-Jax which does the same thing and I have learnt to always open the drivers window before closing the drivers door and stepping outside to clear the screen of ice/open the bonnet etc.
Its a mistake you should only make once.

Sounds like the "door open" switch in the passenger door lock has failed - a very common VAG fault, usually caused by dry solder joints deep within the mechanism.

Don't be fooled by the courtesy lights coming on - this will be when you remotely unlock, and not necessarily when you open the door.

Unlock the car and open/close another door to stop the alarm from relocking. Wait until the courtesy lights go out, and then open the offending passenger door - if the courtesy lights don't come on, then there's your problem.

It always used to be the case that the auto-relock feature could not be disabled, as it formed part of the car's insurance group rating - not sure if this still holds true, though.

this happened to our 12-year old Golf last month - we've had it from new and for the first time ever, my OH locked the keys in the car by doing pretty much what the OP did (except without the handbag). Opened passenger door, threw keys onto drivers seat, shut passenger door, and it locked itself. Fortunately with a bit of old brake pipe, duct tape, super strong magnet and some big screwdrivers, we managed to jemmy the door open enough to fish them out.

It's interesting to know what the fault could be!

Ahh, OK.
In this scenario. the engine is not running!

Yes then, it sounds as if the alarm has timed out and did not registed the passenger door opening.

I've just had this exact problem! My Seat Ibiza would lock itself if only the passenger door was opened. The door switch is built into the lock mechanism, I replaced the mechanism the other day and the switch now works perfectly. However I now have a couple of other problems. frown

Sounds like a problem with the mechanism. I know that if you unlock the car and then don't open a door, after 2 minutes it will lock again automatically.
