I had a 2004 pre-FSI car and covered around 30k miles in it over a 4 year period, I bought it when the car was 3 years old.
I never really had any minor niggles with mine - only two major items - and they are fundamentally well built cars. The problems were as follows:
1) There was a problem with either the thermostat or the radiator, I can't remember which, but the car showed signs of overheating and whilst the engine was out, I had a few cooling system parts and other unrelated cheap-ish pumps etc replaced for around £800 all in. I seem to recall it was a common issue.
2) For the last few months of ownership the car would not restart if it had been running through central London traffic and had obviously got hot. It would need to wait until it had cooled, at least 20-30 minutes before it would respond to the key being turned in the ignition. After getting stranded on double yellows in London rush hour traffic, I lost faith in the car and a change was probably on the cards anyway. I had a few specialists look at it, including the one who sorted the problem above, and no one could identify the problem.
MPG wise, I think I got around 25 on a run, but mine would not have been quite as efficient as the FSI I expect. Around town I got 12-15mpg. Looking at those figures, it was as efficient as my current car, a twin turbo E63 AMG, despite weighing about the same and having over 200bhp less!!
Great car, I drove mine from Frankfurt to London in a day and had the needle nudging 170mph on the autobahn. Best cruising car I've ever had an I still miss it at this time of year when the roads are a bit slippy.
