The 'best' car on my company car list is a Golf GTD. What are the general opinions on this? I'm getting one for 4 days next weekend and quite looking forward to it. I currently drive a 320D.

It is a little smaller than I would ideally like but I couldn't bear 4 years in any of the blander alternatives (2.0 Octavia Elegance, 1.6 Passat SE, 1.6 Focus Titanium, A3 1.6 SE, 118D SE).

Nor do I want to take the cash alternative as I'd struggle to get anything better as the amount is pretty stingy, the car has to fit a number of criteria and I average 25000 miles per annum.

Bizarrely, the Octavia vRS isn't on the list as it's 'monthly lease cost', as calculated by the lease company, is too much, even though it is the cheaper car. Only saying that as it would be the first choice given the size and spec. and no doubt something all readers of this thread will suggest as a suitable alternative!

Thanks in advance!

I've got one, think it's great, apart from it being a stinky diesel. Although it gets average of 44mpg.

Comfortable, fairly quick, looks good, fantastic spec and the dog fits easily in the boot. Done 250miles non stop recently and came out with no aching or anything, it sat comfortably at a good speed the hole way. Light great.

Can't complain apart from it's a boring hatch!

Only 44mpg?

I hope that is you ragging it everywhere?

What about on a steady motorway cruise at 70mph?

Honest John has a good real world MPG page.

The manufacturer figures are all bullst bordering on false advertising.

No, not at all. The missus drives it most of the time, and has the dog in the boot, so I imagine she drives sensibly. It was 44mph when I got in it to go on holiday (the 250mile trip) and it was still on 44mpg, I was steady but faster than she will go to work as I was on motorways.

Probably get over 50 at 70.

My missus has one as her company car and basically the same thing as above.
She had a 320d briefly before it and I'd say the Golf trumps it easily.

The styling is a bit dull but the thing shifts quite well and handles very well, it's a little softer than the GTI (chap at work has one and we've done a quick back to back) but only slightly heavier.

Weirdly, it also sounds pretty good for a diesel when you give it death. That's not something I ever thought I'd find myself saying/typing.

ETA, it averaged about 45mpg on the way back from Devon with cruise set at 85 over the weekend. At 70mph it's well over 50mpg iirc.

You dont't have to go diesel to get 45-50mpg in a golf, see the thread on the 1.4ACT engine. It won't quite match the mid range grunt but it makes up for this being far smoother and quieter.

No but I have to go diesel as there are no petrols on my co. car list.

What would you end up with if you took the money instead? Leasing is so cheap on some cars, you may be quids in!

Leasing initially looks attractive but on any of the lease websites, as soon as you put 25k PA in the model, the attractive headline figures suddenly increase quite a bit!

Not ruled out a vRS on a PCP or lease yet. I still have 4 months until my BMW goes back so will have to get off my bottom and get around the dealers.

You should easily get well into the 50s for MPG, I get that from my Mk6 without any effort on the motorway. They really do an excellent job of just eating up the miles in total comfort, especially when paired up with the DSG

I've had mine since September. Never less than 44 never more than 55 sounds about right to me.

Lovely car, very happy with mine.

I've done 4500 miles in mine and can quite easily get 55mpg+ on a motorway run. Best I've seen was 63.9mpg on a 120 mile trip.

I came from a GTI but can honestly say the balance the GTD offers is far better.

The 1.4 ACT thread JackReacher refers to is about mine, irrespective as you can't get a petrol the interior is a lovely place to be. As per another comment once I'd got use to it no aches or pains, & I did 3k miles in the first 5 weeks. Seat position is multi adjustable as is steering wheel. Adaptive cruise is a real bonus if you do lots of miles. I chose mine over a BM, I found the interiors depressing. Only issue is I find the boot small, seems smaller than my old MK 5.

Key Question: Are you allowed DSG?

I always thought I'd buy a GTD with the DSG 'box, then I tried one. And another. And just to be sure another, and I hated it.

Not everyone loves DSG.

Fair enough. Personally, I'd rather eat my own face than have a manual diesel golf.

In everyday driving I don't find it hugely different to driving a turbocharged petrol Golf. They both have a fairly narrow powerband.

But a DSG would make everything bright and shiney.
