Seen an '11 DSG Passat TDi sitting at 80k miles and quite like it. Are the internet horrors real or would I be quite safe for the next 40-50k?

The crucial thing is whether it's had the essential DSG oil changes at 40K intervals. If the changes are smooth it'll probably be fine but any sign of a jerky change would be reason to walk away.

Just over 3 years ago, I took a 2.0TDI 140 DSG Octavia in PX, it was 3 years old had covered 83,000 miles, it's been in my parents possession since then, now on about 110K it's been faultless. Pretty sure DSG's from about 07 onwards were revised and much more reliable. I'll add they both drive it pretty gently, not sure they've had the DSG oil changed while they've owned it.

Those tend to be pretty good reliability wise smile

I've done 130k miles in mine (golf DSG) in that time it's had 3 DSG oil changes, never been a problem

Clunky gear changes were diagnosed as a worn engine/gearbox mount.......

As said the oil and filter change every 40k is crucial. If it's not been done walk away. Common failure is Mechatronics Unit which can be repaired and refurbished by companies like ECU Testing for a reasonable cost.

Thanks. So assuming it's due an oil and filter now what is the likely cost of that?

£180 inclusive. It isn't a long job but the gearbox oil needs to be in a specific temperature range when changed so the dealer will likely want the car left with them rather than on a 'whilst you wait'.

As above look for evidence of oil changes and you should be ok, on 80k it will probably be due its second.

I've had two high mileage DSGs, the first a Mk5 GTI and now a Mk6 2.0 TDI. Interestingly the 5 appeared to still have its original gearbox and showing no issues at 100k miles, but the 6 needed a complete new unit at 70k miles according to the paperwork I've got which I didn't see until after purchase.

I would definitely recommend them but you do need to tread carefully. If you're concerned consider an extended warranty.
