My Shame. Where is my power steering reservoir '06 A6 2.7tdi

Been asked to check my power steering level as my car is making an awful racket on tick over (not so much under throttle) but it's also noisier when steering is applied. To my eternal shame I have no idea where the power steering reservoir is, and I can't see any dipstick. I think it's the Gray cap on the right behind the headlight it says something about minerals.
Anyone?

Usually there's a pointy-down bit as part of the lid which acts as a dipstick.

Well I eventually got the lid off with a 2p piece and a pair of pliers for leverage.

The chamber was empty which is worrying seeing how it was only topped up 3wks ago at service. I have a noisy pump, and this is another symptom of a failing pump. Anyone know parts and labour on such a job? I fear replacing the pump will include taking the front end off (everything else seems to), but would like to be pleasantly surprised. Anyone?
