I now have a 328i, previously had a MK5 GTI. The 4 cyl 328i has the acoustic engine noise pumped into the cabin, it sounds good, even if it is fake!

The 328i is an excellent drive smile

If you don't fancy spending a lot more cash, shirely a nice low mileage Mk 5 Ed 30 with a stage 1 map would do the trick, or a late bmw 130i is another favourite. Due to a shorter commute i'm going to be looking at late Mk 5 R32's next - something silly for a year or so, petrol has come down a bit, why not. I know they're not that quick anymore, but the grip and noise do it for me alone..

I went from an A3 2.0T quattro, via an 8P S3 and other machinery, eventually to a late Mk5 R32.

If you consider that the A3 was mechanically similar to the Mk5 GTI (other than Haldex), then it's a reasonable place to start for any comparison.

The R32 is a very satisfying car to run, if a little hard to explain in numbers rather than words.

When thinking of the latest Mk7 R, 8V S3 or M135, I'd say that the R32's charms are what an acoustic guitar or turntable are to their modern equivalents. But, in short, it's "alive".

No-one is going to come to the mass market with an offer based on a soulful NA V6 again. Whether that's because there was something wrong or not with that offer is entirely up to you to decide...

Either way, experience it while you can.

hehe

Its a good example of just accepting the default values from Auto Trader rather than writing a customised advert. Cheapest in the the country for a MK7 GTI though so can't complain too much!

Replaced mine with a new Golf R back in the summer - in the same spec (3dr, manual). After 6000 miles and 6 months the R is starting to come alive with character, and also come into it's own in the winter conditions. I'm average 5 mpg more from it... and there's just so much power on tap!
